15th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CENTRE FOR FERTILIZERS
Fertilizers and Fertilization for Sustainability in Agriculture: the First World meets the Third World - Challenges for the Future
27-30 September 2004
South Africa
Jointly organized by:
The Department of Plant Production and Soil Science
University of Pretoria
and
The International Scientific Centre for Fertilizers
In South Africa today, as a microcosm of the whole world, there are two different “worlds” when agriculture is considered. In the one, agricultural products are produced on a large commercial scale and producers have access to fertilizers through access to credit, adequate profits, and knowledge. In the other, subsistence and small-scale farmers produce little or just enough to sustain their families due to environmental constraints and inadequate access to fertilizers, credit, knowledge, etc. Where agriculture contributes only about 4% of the GDP, the majority of the population of South Africa is highly dependent on it in different forms (commercial through subsistence). Together with the challenge of introducing and maintaining sustainable agricultural practices, many rural communities face the challenge to increase fertilizer use to better their livelihoods. The major topics of the symposium will therefore be:
Developments in commercial fertilizer materials
Fertilizers from industrial by-products and waste materials
Organic-fertilizer use and technology in agriculture
Fertilization, environmental quality and sustainability
Fertilizer use in precision agriculture
Advanced aspects of macro- and micronutrient fertilization
Fertilization and food quality
Fertilization related to food security and improved rural livelihoods
Challenges related to inadequate access to fertilizers
The objective of the symposium is to bring together scientists from South Africa and the rest of the world to discuss different aspects concerning fertilizer use. At the end of the symposium it is hoped that delegates will leave having shared ideas, having contributed to the body of knowledge concerning fertilizer use, and having made friends and contacts for future research and the sharing of knowledge.
