You asked for the following information from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ):


  1. The number of "intensive drug treatment" options in the community.


(2) The number of intensive drug treatment options that are considered to be of high intensity, defined by the MoJ as: "residential based intervention programmes where treatment is available with the expectation that the individual will reside in designated premises and comply fully with the programme" (MoJ, 2010, Breaking the Cycle).


(3) How many of these high intensity options are available to female offenders?

Please note, we have interpreted your request to relate to the department’s “alternatives to custody pilot programme” which includes drug treatment options within the community. I can confirm that the department holds information that you have asked for, and I am pleased to provide this to you:


The Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice have piloted a range of treatment-based alternatives to custody for mentally ill and substance misusing offenders. We piloted models in 16 areas in England, including four women-only pilots, with the remainder providing service to both genders. 13 of these pilots continue to operate for a second year, under the direction of NHS England, including three of the female offender only pilots.
