Installing an HP OfficeJet G85xi w/ Windows 2000

Installing/using an HP G85 on a Windows 2000 PC is fraught with numerous software issues. The HP Director software in particular would hang most of the time upon launch. Here’s how I solved the issues – some of which involved speaking with HP technical support.

HP recommends using LPT1 vs USB (due to flakey USB chipset designs) ** see doc bottom.

If using USB HP recommends using a USB powered hub

If you need to reinstall the software (in the event you wish to switch port usage) use the uninstaller provided on the CDROM – force4uni.bat

Adjust the Registry Size in System_Properties/Advanced/Performance/Change to set ‘Maximun reg size’ to be four times that of the ‘Current reg size’

HP’s exercise in uninstalling Device Manager USB and ECP entries made no difference whatsoever.

I’ve noticed Norton Antivirus 2002 would occasionally prevent Director from functioning. Disabling NAV Auto-Protect before launching Director solved this problem.

If the Director hangs: Open the Task Manager, click on Processes tab, click on ‘Image Name’ a couple times to sort the entries, then ‘end process’ on all hp**** entries. This will kill the hung HP Director and associated processes. Simply relaunch the Director from the desktop (or Program Files) icon

******** I’ve found that removing the HPoopm07.exe registry entry in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run made a huge difference in consistent HP Director operation.

For Parallel Port installs:

Set PC’s BIOS to ECP only (not to ECP+EPP - according to HP)

In ‘Device Manager’ expand ‘Ports’ – Right-click on ECP Printer

Select ‘Port Settings’ tab – Select ‘Use any interrupt assigned to the port’.

Make sure ‘Enable legacy Plug and Play detection’ is checked
