Eye and Ear Celebrates Australia's Oldest Cochlear Implant Recipient

MEDIA RELEASE EYE AND EAR CELEBRATES AUSTRALIAS OLDEST COCHLEAR

27 September 2018

The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital together with the University of Melbourne’ s Department of Otolaryngology and Cochlear Ltd, today celebrated the 100th birthday of patient Mrs Dulcie Selleck, who the organisations believe is the oldest person in Australia living with a cochlear implant.

To celebrate this special event her family, her surgeon Professor Stephen O'Leary, the hospital, the University of Melbourne’ s Department of Otolaryngology and Cochlear Ltd came together to wish Mrs Selleck the happiest birthday.

Mrs Selleck had her cochlear implant surgery when she was 98. She says that: “I am sorry I put off having this done so many years ago. I was pleasantly surprised that the operation was not as bad as I thought it would be. I am much happier now. I enjoy going out with my group of ladies and joining fun and frivolities.”

Mrs Selleck is a perfect reminder that age is not a barrier to having a cochlear implant to treat hearing loss. Cochlear implants improve quality of life and social interaction for older people suffering from hearing loss. The Eye and Ear’s Cochlear Implant Clinic can help people of all ages, seeing patients aged from 3 months to 98 years.

We were excited to celebrate Mrs Selleck’s birthday. It’s heart-warming to see her interacting with her family. Isolation and depression are common consequences of untreated hearing loss. Cochlear implants really help patients interact with their family and enjoy the simplest moments in life like sharing stories with their children and grandchildren,” Professor Stephen O'Leary said.

Last year the Eye and Ear marked the 4000th cochlear implant surgery and the 1000th child to receive a cochlear implant at the hospital doubling the number of cochlear devices implanted in Victoria over the past seven years, after celebrating the 2000th cochlear implant surgery in 2010.

These significant milestones are a reminder that more Victorians than ever have been given the gift of hearing.

We have made huge progress since the world’s first cochlear implant at the Eye and Ear in 1978 and are delighted that patients like Mrs Selleck can have an improved quality of life until they are 100 and beyond. ”

About cochlear implants

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that is surgically inserted into a person's inner ear - the cochlea - to help them hear better. The implant stimulates the hearing nerve and provides sound signals directly to the brain. Cochlear implants are also known as 'bionic ears'

This rapid increase in recipients is due to a number of factors. In particular, research and technology advancements have expanded the numbers of patients who can benefit from a cochlear implant The Eye and Ear’s Cochlear Implant Clinic sees patients from three months to 98 years.
