On Tuesday, March 3 at 10:30am, a press conference in support of Problem Gambling Awareness Week will be held at the Legislative Office Building, in Room 1B. Senator Andrea Stillman, along with the CT Partnership for Responsible Gambling, whose members include the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the CT Council on Problem Gambling, will host this event.

A television public service announcement to raise awareness of problem gambling issues faced by youth will be debuted at the event.

The PSA, “You Tell Your Friend,” was developed in concert with the students, faculty and parents who participate in the GAMES (Gambling Awareness of Monroe through Educating our Students) initiative of Masuk High School in Monroe. It is a compilation of thoughts and statements that friends might tell each other. Masuk’s students are featured in this compelling spot, which encourages youth to reach out to their peers to find help and hope for problem gambling behavior.

The PSA is based on an original concept from the Vermont Council on Problem Gambling. Funding for the project was provided by the CT Lottery. Representatives from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Problem Gambling Services, the CT Council on Problem Gambling as well as the faculty and parents of Masuk High School provided assistance in the development of the PSA.

The PSA will be broadcast throughout the coming year by the CT Lottery.

Confirmed speakers for the Press Conference include: Senator Andrea Stillman; Anne M. Noble, President & CEO, CT Lottery; Carlos Reinoso, Prevention Outreach Educator, CT Council on Problem Gambling; Susan McLaughlin, Primary Prevention Services Coordinator, Problem Gambling Services, DMHAS. Student representatives from Masuk High School will introduce the PSA to the audience.

Additional Lottery efforts in support of Problem Gambling Awareness Week will include:

1. Suspension of product advertising from radio and TV from March 1-7. The Lottery will replace product advertising with PSAs.

2. Signs at retail locations to increase awareness about responsible play, and messaging to consumers via a voice response phone system and lottery web site.

3. Press advisory in support of the Lottery’s commitment to act in a socially responsible manner.

You tell your friends many things. We urge you to tell them to attend this press conference.
