Verb reported clause- move one tense back

Verbs move back one tense reporting thoughts and feelings.

I hoped you would come round.

I thought Freddy Mercury had been a Muslim.

I didn’t know she was from Newcastle. I thought she was from Scandanavia.

I forgot we had your parents for dinner.


No tense change- if reporting verb is in present simple(e.g says /asks)

It will snow tomorrow.” The weatherman says it will snow tomorrow.

The dinner isn’t ready yet.” She says the dinner isn’t ready yet.

No tense change- if in reported speech something is still true.

The patient is still very ill.” The doctor told the relatives the patient is still very ill.


Modal verb changes.

We may come to the party” The girls told him they might come to the party.

Reporting Verbs

Tell +indirect object.

She told her husband she was having an affair.


Possible to use that after say and tell+ indirect object.

She told her husband that she would be home late.

She said that it was over.

Descriptive Reporting Verbs

Explain, interrupt,demand, insist, admit, complain, warn

He explained that it wasn’t fair.

She admitted that it was true.


Report the idea .

I’ll forgive you!” He offered to forgive her.

I won’t come back !” She refused to come back.

Reported questions

Use - positive word order sentence.

-no do/does/did

Why have you come here ?” She asked him why he had come here.

Why do you want to live with him?”He wanted to know why she wanted to live with him.

No - ? in reported questions.

No –say in reported questions.

He said , “How are you ?” He asked me how I was.

No question word use if or whether.

Reported commands, requests , offers and advice.

Use verb + person + to + infinitive

The teacher told us to study hard for the exam.

The student asked me to correct his / her homework.

The Dean of the university urged the lecturers to return to work.

She persuaded him to marry her.

The ministers advised the Prime Minister to resign.

N.B no –Say use - ask, told etc.

Reported questions - ask

She asked him why he was here.

He asked her why she had come.

They both asked each other how they knew the married couple.
