Cycling to school policy

Cycling to school

Any parents who wishes their child to ride a bike to school must complete a form (available from the school office) giving them permission to do so.

There are some guidelines that have been set for those children wishing to cycle to and from school.

  1. Whilst no child should be excluded by age from cycling to school, before signing the consent form, parents should consider whether their child is mature and safe enough to cycle on their own, or whether they should only be accompanied by an adult.

  2. The cycling policy will be attached to the consent form so that parents can agree to the guidelines in the school policy.

  3. The cycle training permission forms will be kept in a folder in the school office.

  4. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that cycles are kept in a roadworthy condition at all times.

  5. It is recommended, but not essential that the child should have completed level 1 and level 2 cycle training. However, even on completion of the cycle training, it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child is safe enough to ride a cycle to school. Completion of the cycling courses is not a guarantee of being roadworthy.

  6. We consider it vitally important that children wear cycle helmets and any child seen cycling to school without a helmet will be reminded to wear one. Parents must ensure that their child has a cycle helmet labelled with the child’s name.

  7. Children should, where possible, wear high visibility clothing and in poor visibility cycles should have adequate lighting (front and rear).

  8. Entry to the school is via the main gate. Cyclists must dismount at the gate and walk their cycle to the cycle shed. At the end of the day, before mounting cycles to ride home, pupils should walk their bikes off the premises to the school gate.

  9. Cycles should be padlocked whilst in school. The school cannot accept responsibility for loss, theft or damage to any cycle or associated items brought into school.

  10. If a child is seen riding in a manner considered unsafe whilst on the way to or from school, this will be brought to the parent’s attention, for them to consider whether their child is safe enough to continue to cycle to school, following further cycle tuition from home.

  11. The school reserves the right to withdraw permission to bring cycles into school grounds without prior notice, if any of the above are not adhered to.

The school organises cycle training for pupils, which is provided by Norfolk County Council. The courses are optional for pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6.

Scooters

It is not necessary for a consent form to be filled in for a child who wishes to ride their scooter to school, however, we do recommend the following guidelines.

  1. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that scooters are kept in a roadworthy condition at all times.

  2. Before a child rides their scooter to school, it is the responsibility of the parent to decide if they consider their child to be safe to do so.

  3. As with cycles, we recommend that helmets, high visibility clothing and other protective clothing (as deemed necessary) are worn.

  4. Entry to the school is via the main gate. Riders must dismount at the gate and walk their scooter to the cycle shed.

  5. Scooters should be padlocked whilst in school. The school cannot accept responsibility for loss, theft or damage to any scooter or associated items brought into school.

  6. If a child is seen riding in a manner considered unsafe, whilst on the way to or from school, this will be brought to the parent’s attention for them to consider whether their child is safe enough to continue to ride to school, following further guidance from home.

  7. The school reserves the right to withdraw permission to bring scooters into school grounds without prior notice, if any of the above are not adhered to.
