Checklist of Important History Sources for North Craven

This list is at first sight rather forbidding but in practice many of the sources will not provide any useful information about parish or relevant local history. Many web sites are quickly searchable for relevant content and can be noted or dismissed with little effort. In perhaps most cases where useful documents are catalogued one must unfortunately then have to visit a Record Office or library (in Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, York, Northallerton, Kendal or Preston) or The National Archives (TNA) in London to see items or microfilms and make a copy of some sort – a photocopy or digital image – which usually requires permission and payment. However it is travel costs which are the major deterrent. Careful planning is needed coupled with a list of items to find and view. Pre-ordering of documents on-line has sometimes to be considered.

1. Preliminary finding aids and major sources

Search by the name of the parish/township you are studying

(Note, though, that it will sometimes also be necessary to search under the name of

settlements within the parish/township, where the name of a significant settlement is not

the same as that of the administrative unit).
