RESPONSIBILITY IN COMMON AREAS: BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL

RESPONSIBILITY IN COMMON AREAS: CAFETERIA


GOAL: The lunch line and cafeteria at BSMS will be a safe and clean environment where people interact with courtesy and respect.


RESPONSIBLE CAFETERIA BEHAVIOR


1. Students will use quiet voices (2-3 level) when talking.


2. Students will keep hands, feet, and other objects to themselves.


3. Students will stay in their seats and raise their hands to get help.


4. Students will eat appropriately and quietly – using good manners.


5. Students will take only the items they need.

a. One straw per beverage.

b. Appropriate quantity of food items, unless prepared to pay for extra.


6. Students will not take drinks out of the cafeteria.


7. Students will walk to the café, into the cafeteria, and from the cafeteria in an appropriate

manner.


8. Everyone will treat others with dignity and respect.


9. Students will be responsible by cleaning up after themselves, disposing of all trash and tray in the appropriate place and returning directly to his/her seat.


10. Students will be allowed to charge a maximum of two meals.


11. Students will not be allowed to charge extra food items.



CONSEQUENCES FOR INFRACTIONS


When a student misbehaves, calmly and consistently implement the mildest consequence that is appropriate.


1. Verbal reminder

2. Positive practice – have the student try it again..


3. Misbehavior in lunch line—have the student go to the end of the line.


4. Misbehavior at table:

a. Verbal reminder of expected behavior

b. Assigned seating for individuals at timeout tables.

c. Assigned seating for class.

d. Isolated lunch away from cafeteria.


5. Lunchroom monitor will report to classroom teacher excessive noise from any given

class.


6. Loss of television privileges.


7. Use office referral only for physically dangerous behavior, illegal behavior, or for failure

to follow direction.


ENCOURAGEMENT PROCEDURES


Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions.


1. Initiate positive attention and friendly interactions.


2. Provide verbal praise for following cafeteria rules and expectations.


3. Provide verbal praise for meeting one or more of the school’s five guidelines for success.


4. The principal will congratulate the student body over the intercom when students demonstrate

responsible behavior during lunches.


5. When students demonstrate responsible behavior during lunches over a long period of time, the

principal may provide a special treat, such as ice cream.


6. Teachers and staff may reward appropriate behavior at their discretion.


7. Students who have been placed in assigned seats and show positive improvement will be placed

in regular seating.


SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES


1. There will be lunchroom monitors for the cafeteria. The monitors will be trained by the

assistant principal.


2. The assistant principal will assist with cafeteria supervision, as needed.


3. During the first week of school, there will be extra supervisors in the cafeteria. The principal will

arrange for additional staff to assist with this supervision.


4. If a student violates a rule, monitors will use a firm, respectful voice to tell the student what

he/she should be doing.


5. For repeat infractions, monitors will implement a consequence.


6. If a student refuses to follow directions or argues, the student will be calmly told that he/she can

choose to follow the directions or be referred to the office for failure to follow the directions.


7. If a student refuses to go to the office, no attempt should be made to physically move him/her.

Simply inform the assistant principal of the incident.


TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES


1. At the beginning of the new year and after long vacations, classroom teachers will teach the

rules and expectations as outlined.


2. During the first week of the year, staff are encouraged to eat with their classes at least twice to

reinforce appropriate behavior.


3. Lunch rules and expectations will be reviewed with student teachers and new assistants by the

assistant principal.





























LESSON PLANS FOR BSMS CAFETERIA GUIDELINES

(Language Arts)


I. Introduction:

A. The lunch line and cafeteria at BSMS will be a safe and clean environment where

people interact with courtesy and respect.

B. Objectives

Students will learn to observe, identify, and use appropriate cafeteria behavior.

Politeness and courtesy in the cafeteria will earn rewards. (social skill)


II. Tell Phase:

A. Teacher will help students match the Guidelines for Success rule with B E A R S

Guidelines.

B. Students will sit with a partner to take about 10 minutes to answer the following

questions:

1. What is cool and what is uncool behavior in the cafeteria? Why?

C. Discuss appropriate answers making sure all parts are covered.

1. Students will use quiet voices when talking.

2. Students will keep hands, feet, and other objects to themselves.

3. Students will stay in their seats and raise their hands to get help.

4. Students will eat appropriately and quietly – using good manners.

5. Students will take only the items they need:

a. One straw per beverage

b. Appropriate quantity of food items, unless prepared to pay for extra.

6. Students will not bring beverages in glass containers.

7. Students will walk to the cafe, into the cafeteria, and from the cafeteria in an

appropriate manner.

8. Everyone will treat others with dignity and respect.

9. Students will dispose of all trash and trays in appropriate place and return

directly to their seats.

10. Students will (use responsibility) clean up after themselves.

11. Students will be allowed to charge a maximum of two meals.

12. Students will no be allowed to charge extra food items.


III. Show Phase:

  1. The teacher will select two or three groups of students to verbally share their answers with the class.

  2. The teacher will then discuss appropriate answers before the ‘show phase’.

Student give suggestions and ideas are written on the board (if any from the committee weren’t suggested – teachers suggests) Make sure all rules on board!


IV. Do Phase:

Observation / written assignment:

Observe cafeteria and report back to class

Write 5 cool and 5 uncool rules on the chart.


V. Conclusion

Class creates a poster chart for future reference


Day 2 – Cafeteria – (Show Me Phase expanded)


I. Introduction

A. The lunchline and the cafeteria will be a safe and clean place.

B. Students will understand how the BSMS Guidelines for Success play a part in

successful cafeteria behavior.

  3. Act responsibly

  4. Reflect a positive attitude

  5. Show cooperation

C. Students will model appropriate manners, and demonstrate responsible, respectful

cafeteria behavior.


II. Tell Phase:

  1. Collect the homework of cafeteria observations.

  2. Relate student homework to BEARS Guidelines for Success.

  3. Create a list on a T-chart on the board: Cool / Uncool


III. Show Phase:

Model appropriate behavior in cooperative groups (use borrowed supplies from the

cafeteria).


IV. Do Phase:

Assign cooperative groups and select rules that need to be modeled.

Go to the cafeteria and provide a simulated practice.


V. Conclusion:

Give students specific feedback and praise.

Discuss consequences of successful/unsuccessful cafeteria behavior.


Day 3 – Cafeteria Rules


I. Introduction:

Students will be responsible in the cafeteria and will keep the environment safe and clean.

Students will interact with courtesy and respect


II. Tell Phase

Review the Guidelines for Success / Rules

Review responsible students in the cafeteria. What it looks like and sounds like

Select the best role modeling skits and possibly video tape for future students at BSMS.
