Burns and Major Tissue Loss Rehabilitation at Queen Victoria Hospital

What we can offer

We have two rehabilitation beds that are for adults who have had a burn injury or major tissue loss and require inpatient rehabilitation to achieve functional goals. The two rooms are en-suite with a shared kitchenette area to enable patients to have more independence prior to leaving hospital. On transfer to Queen Victoria Hospital patients will initially go to a side room on the main burns ward to allow for assessments and to settle into a rehabilitation regime. The patient will then move to the designated rehabilitation area when appropriate.

We accept patients:

Who have functional rehabilitation goals
Who require physical assistance including hoisting and other manual handling requirements and assistance with activities of daily living.
Whose mental health is manageable within a ward environment with RMN support if necessary.
Who require dressing changes

At the end of the expected rehabilitation stay if a suitable environment for discharge is not ready the patient will be expected to return to the referring hospital.

What information we need for referring a patient:

Patients must be medically and surgically stable

The referral form needs to be completed with all appropriate reports.

Rehabilitation goals and an estimated length of stay

Discharge plan for the patient and contacts with any services involved with discharge planning.

When the patient is transferred to us we expect an updated report from all relevant professionals including updated rehabilitation goals.

Services we offer whilst patients are with us:

Input from professionals: including: Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychological Therapists, Nurses, Doctors, Dieticians, Pharmacist, Pain Team, Prosthetics.
Rehabilitation within a hospital setting and in the community.
On-site pressure garment technicians
Access to Camouflage make-up practitioners
Access to hydrotherapy

- There is support available from the Burns Support Group to assist family members in visiting patients whilst at Queen Victoria Hospital
