Non Capture of barcodes – The Impact

Practitioner Services processes all prescriptions in Scotland for payment purposes. All prescription forms are scanned by high speed batch scanners and the contents of the image is processed using Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR).

For ePharmacy to be efficiently used it is vital that PSD is able to read the barcode on the GP10 in order to associate the appropriate ETP (electronic transfer of prescription) message with the form.

Community Pharmacists also rely on the barcode to give them the ability to scan the prescribed information/patient details directly into their PMR systems. If the barcode does not scan then pharmacists have to revert to manual keying of the prescription details.

Required Corrective and Checking Action

There are 3 main issues which cause barcode capture to fail:-

1 Printer Alignment –

Please ensure that all printers in your GP Practices, which are used to generate prescription forms, are aligned correctly

.

Action: - Please check -The barcode is printing on the left-hand side of the form centralised within the ‘white’ area on the prescription form.

2 Low toner –

Please ensure that all printers in your GP Practices, which are used to generate prescription forms, have toner cartridges checked regularly and replaced when necessary.

Action: - Please check – The barcode printed on the prescription form is clear and readable, not faint and/or smeared.

3 Prescriber signature through the barcode –

Please ensure that all personnel in the GP Practices, who are responsible for signing prescription forms, are aware that a signature mark encroaching on the printed barcode will deem it unreadable.

Action: - Please check – The signature on the prescription form is within the signature box area and does not encroach on any other part of the prescription form
