Dependence

Thomas Stormer Viscometer

  1. Place the viscometer on a level surface, allowing the driving weight to drop without obstruction for about 40 inches.

  2. Attach the rotor by pushing its stem into the chuck and tightening the knurled setscrew.

  3. Position the test cup in the empty water bath; position it so that it will not rotate.

  4. Place sufficient test liquid in the cup to cover the drum sides.

  5. Raise the bath platform to the stop and tighten the setscrew. It’s important that the drum’s rotation is not impeded.

  6. Determine the temperature of the test liquid.

  7. Release the brake on the weight and allow it to fall freely for 100 revolutions on the counter. Determine the time required for 100 revolutions.

  8. Repeat this test three times to obtain an average time.

  9. The graph accompanying the viscometer can be used to convert time to viscosity in centipoises; convert this value to Pa s units.

  10. Use room temperature oil, SAE 30.

Brookfield Viscometer

  1. Brookfield DV-1+ Viscometer: The principle of operation is to drive a spindle, immersed in the test fluid, through a calibrated spring. Viscous drag on the spindle causes spring deflection. This deflection is sensed by a rotary transducer and is calibrated to indicate absolute viscosity, .

  2. Operation

    1. Level the viscometer.

    2. Turn power on with switch of rear panel.

    3. You will see the following screens

  1. Remove Spindle

Press Any Key

The spindle is attached to the viscometer by screwing into the lower shaft.

The spindle has a left-hand thread. The lower shaft should be held and

lifted up while the spindle is screwed to the left.

    1. Autozero the viscometer, after removing the spindle.

    2. Reinstall the Number 2 spindle. The viscometer is set to used this spindle as indicated by S02 on the display.

    3. The range of viscosity, which may be measure, is set by the spindle selection and the speed of rotation. The speed is set at 60 RPM as indicated on the display.

    4. Lower the spindle into the test fluid until the spindle groove is at the liquid level. Ensure that spindle rotation is not obstructed. Center the spindle in the test liquid.

    5. Start rotation with Motor ON. Allow time for the indication to stabilize. The viscometer is set to indicate in mPa.s

  1. Experiment

    1. The test liquid is SAE 30W motor oil.

    2. Measure viscosity at four temperatures (in oC).

Report

  1. Plot the following data on a single graph: Brookfield viscosity vs temperature.

  2. Note the trend of viscosity vs temperature.

  3. Compare the Thomas Stormer value to a published value at the same temperature from your text. Note: Brookfield data should not be compared to published values.
