Answer both questions!

  1. (40%) Explain the difference in form and meaning between the members of each of

the following sentence pairs.

1a I bought Georgia’s poster.

b I bought Georgia a poster.

2a I’ve just checked it out.

b I’ve just checked out.

3a The party wasn’t altogether successful.

b Altogether, the party wasn’t successful.

4a She was to be questioned on the issue.

b She was being questioned on the phone.

5a Teachers, always remember to mention plagiarism.

b Teachers always remember to mention plagiarism.

2. (60%) Read the following text and answer the questions below.

1 Mobile phones ‘more dangerous than smoking’

2 Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an

3 award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them

4 whenever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take

5 “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

6 The study by Dr Vini Khurana is the most devastating indictment yet published of the 7 health risks. It draws on growing evidence, exclusively reported in the IoS in October, 8 that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers

9 take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on

10 earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones that long.

11 Earlier this year, the French Government warned against the use of mobile phones,

12 and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.

13 Professor Khurana, a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 14 years, has reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put

15 the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper that is based on his research is

16 currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

17 Noting that malignant brain tumours represent “a life-ending diagnosis”, he says: “We 18 are currently experiencing an unchecked and dangerous situation.” He fears that

19 ”unless the industry and government take immediate and decisive steps “, the

20 incidence of malignant brain tumours will be observed to rise globally within a decade 21 from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.

B What phrase type is underlined at lines 6-7? Give a detailed description of its internal

paragraph so that the nouns are turned into verbs while you keep its basic meaning.

Make other necessary syntactic changes. Comment on the difference in style between

your version and the original.
