The post holder will have teaching and admin duties in the economics and public policy (EPP) department and will also liaise with the Library, Dean’s Suite, other Business School faculty, EdTech teams, Marketing and Student Recruitment teams. Academic Directors, Programme Directors; Programme Management Teams; Head of Department of Economics & Public Policy; Faculty in Department of Economics & Public Policy

Purpose of the Post


The main objective of this senior post is to create, lead and implement tutoring and teaching activities within the economics and public policy department at Imperial College Business School, focused on business economics, managerial economics, economics of public policy, global macroeconomics and/or others related to economics and public policy.


The post holder will bring relevant senior experience in the sector with a proven track record and will be expected to lead and develop teaching in the Business School both through degree programmes and executive education. They will have contributed significantly to education within their department or area, leading to innovation in programme design and delivery.


Teaching Fellows are an important part of our community and contribute primarily to the design and delivery of educational modules, the direction of programmes and the development of innovative approaches to life-long learning. They have the capacity to teach their subjects to non-specialists as well as specialists at the postgraduate level, including executive education. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the School, to participate in the internal life of the School, and to enhance its reputation for pedagogy. They will lead, manage and develop initiatives and learning activities, motivating and mentoring teams. This strategic role will support the Business School’s new strategy and contribute actively to its development.


In line with the Business School strategy of educating aware, responsible and ethical leaders, we offer a holistic learning experience. Economics & Public Policy are a vital element of the teaching portfolio at Imperial College Business School that will feature prominently across our full suite of programmes, both in the post- and undergraduate space.


We are therefore seeking to appoint an expert and senior instructor with demonstrated capacity for innovative design, and excellent delivery of courses on business economics, macroeconomics and public policy. They will evaluate teaching and learning provision with colleagues in the department and adopt an evidence-based approach to enhance quality.



Key Responsibilities


Teaching and Learning Support

  • To create and provide excellent teaching within an established programme of study.

  • To give lectures.

  • To develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches.

  • To use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.

  • To identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement.

  • To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and curricula.

  • To be module/course/programme organiser as appropriate.

  • To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems.

  • To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, field trips and placements.

  • To set and assess work and examinations and provide timely feedback to students.

  • To deliver inclusive teaching and assessment that supports a diverse student cohort

  • To assess the work and progress of students using appropriate criteria and provide constructive feedback to students, including feedback on essays and course assessments.

  • To mark examinations, course work and process marks.

  • To coordinate with internal or visiting lecturers.

  • To act as Admissions tutor/Senior tutor.

  • To assist in admissions process.

  • To act as academic tutor and run academic tutorials.

  • To act as a personal tutor or be responsible for the pastoral care of students within a specified area.

  • To take responsibility for development of new initiatives in teaching.

  • To remain professional in practice and maintain knowledge in own specialist area.


Administration and other activities

  • To make a significant contribution to the efficient management and administration of the department.

  • To develop, scope and implement new programme initiatives within the Economics & Public Policy department.

  • To provide expert advice and guidance to other teaching fellows and professionals.

  • To undertake specific departmental roles as may be required.

  • To participate in committees and working groups within the department and College as required.

  • To participate in relevant professional activities.

  • To innovate to meet the changing needs of students and the evolving nature of Economics & Public Policy.

  • To undertake duties related to course administration, including organisation of teaching activities, attendance records, Health & Safety matters relating to practicals, etc.


Person Specification


Requirements

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Education



A PhD degree and/or postgraduate qualification or equivalent in relevant discipline.

Recognised qualification in Higher Education learning and teaching (or nearing completion).

Experience



Sustained excellence in delivering courses related to business economics, managerial economics, economics of public policy, global macroeconomics, and/or advanced macro-economics.

Experience of designing and delivery of such courses in international contexts, at least at the European level, evidenced by student feedback and/or peer observation.

Significant innovations in relevant learning methodologies.


E


Experience with online platforms and learning management systems.

Knowledge



Specialist knowledge in the relevant discipline and of teaching methods and techniques within your own area.

Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support.

Familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess teaching, including approaches to encourage classroom participation.

Membership of national or international educational or Economics & Public Policy committees

Expertise in the design and successful delivery of online courses on the subject matter, both in synchronous and asynchronous modes.
