Welcome to Making A Difference

Sarah Sisk ’10

My name is Sarah Sisk and I am a senior at Mercy High School. I have been receiving tuition assistance since my freshman year and attending Mercy would not have been a possibility without it. I can truly say that my days at Mercy have been the best four years of my life. Being a student at Mercy High School has allowed me to grow spiritually, academically, and socially. The relationships I have established, values I have acquired, and lifelong lessons I have learned have all been made possible by people like you. You have given me the opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime. Next year I will be attending UCLA’s School of Nursing, my dream college and I will take with me everything I have learned at Mercy. Words cannot express my gratitude for everything you have given. Your kindness has made a huge difference in my life and can change the lives of other young women like me.

As I stand here before you today, looking for the first time into the eyes of those who have made my Mercy experience possible I am able to finally tell you the two, simple words I have wanted to since my freshman year. Thank You

Making A Difference Student Keynote Speech
Excerpts from speech by Cristina Barraza ’10

Community. This definition of community is a fine summary of what Mercy High School is; Mercy is a community made up of students, educators, parents, and the Mercy team which consists of employees, donors, and staff.  My time at Mercy is something I will cherish forever.

I feel that my time at Mercy has greatly changed me; I have fully embodied the traits that Mercy High School holds dear. I have become a woman of compassion, a woman of global awareness, one who strives for academic excellence, and developed a passion for opening myself to new experiences. I believe that Mercy is unique in investing these qualities in their students.  Students gain a unique perspective which encourages them as they move forward in life.

Each year, the juniors are given some of Mercy’s prestigious awards ranging from academics to community service to being a strong Mercy citizen. There is one award, the Spirit of Mercy Memorial Scholarship that is given to a junior who exemplifies “faith, love, courage, compassion, generosity, social justice, and a joy for life.”  This award is given in memory of three Mercy alums Moira O’Donnell, Cindy Caughman and Angelina Ciucci. At the awards ceremony, I was presented with this honor.  I was completely surprised. This was one of those “Mercy moments” that alumnae always spoke about . . . a time when I felt completely at home, glowing with Mercy pride and feeling the warm embrace of Mercy. A Mercy education is a great gift and one that can only happen at this high school.   I hope that other girls can have the same experience.   Mercy girls are forever bonded together with past and future students. We are all family, all wearing the blue and white plaid.

On behalf of all of the girls at Mercy, and especially those who have received aid, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you!  You do make a difference!

-Next year Cristina will be attending Queen Mary, University of London.
