Freedom of Information Request
You asked for the following information from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ):
“I would be grateful if you could supply details of the exercise of the Royal Prerogative of Mercy over the period since April 1997 (which marks the date upon which CCRC started to deal with cases). I am aware of the cases of Michael Shields and Alan Turing, but would welcome details of any other cases in which it has been exercised.”
Your request has been handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
I can confirm that the department holds information that you have asked for, and I am pleased to provide this to you.
I can confirm that the Royal Prerogative of Mercy has only been exercised on 2 occasions since April 1997 when the Criminal Cases Review Commission was set up and these were in the cases of Michael Shields and Alan Turing.
