Day 1

  • Inauguration and introductions

  • Waste management in protected areas

    • Treatment and disposal of solid and liquid waste, including examples of BMPs and case studies

  • Tourist guides and park volunteer programs for protected areas

    • Training and/or capacity building programs (including description and evaluation of the programs) for visitors/tourist guides

    • Examples on environmental education training for park/MPA volunteers, including program curricula, budget, and program evaluation

Day 2

  • Methods to measure the satisfaction of visitors’ experience in protected areas, and associated (surrounding) communities

    • Indicators and methodologies used to measure visitor’s satisfaction and examples on how to use this information for improving the management of the areas

  • Involvement of communities in protected area management (co-management)

    • Mechanisms [to facilitate] and forms of community involvement on PA management

  • Tourist concessions and benefit sharing

    • Mechanisms to grant concessions in protected areas (examples)

    • Can the private sector propose infrastructure and/or service projects?

    • [Based on the management plan and area needs] Can the area administrator manage the conditions and requirements for project bidding? How?

    • How the income from protected area concessions and entrance fees is shared between the park and other parties? How the protected area is benefited from these resources?

Day 3

  • BMP for management of natural and cultural resources in protected areas

    • Highlight or Rescue of “cultural value” of protected areas (including archeological, anthropological, and/or historic value), and how to use it for promoting tourism

  • Indicators and standards to measure:

  • Management effectiveness of land and marine protected areas

  • Management of visitors’ impacts and natural resource threats

  • Carrying capacity of protected areas

    • Carrying capacity: maximum number of visitor vs. acceptable change limit. What is the standard used in the USA?, or mention specific examples of these two indicators.

Day 4

Data Management for Marine Protected Areas

  • Report by CPPS and country members of the regional MPA group of experts

  • Round Table on data and indicators for the CPPS regional GIS system on MPAs
