Theatre Production Provides Firsthand of Holocaust & Auschwitz Camp Survivor

SANTA ANA, CA –Beginning October 18, the Theatre Arts Department of Santa Ana College will feature a special production that tells the story of Holocaust survivor, Fania Fénelon, a popular Parisian singer who was arrested and sent to the death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The production, Playing for Time, shows how Fénelon’s passion for music sustains her as she experiences the horrors and degradation of the Holocaust. However, it is within the walls of the Nazi death camps, as Fénelon, and fellow orchestra camp members are literally playing for time, that this story of courage in the face of adversity is born.

The Santa Ana College production features five distinguished faculty members, including Bonita Jaros, noted mezzo-soprano, in the lead role of Fania Fénelon. Beth Hansen, musical director, plays Alma Rosé, famed violinist and conductor of the women’s orchestra. Professor Melinda Womack and staff members Suzanne Stump and Donna Dickens are also cast in the play.

Playing for Time is scheduled to run October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, & 27 at 8 p.m., and October 21 & 28 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Fine & Performing Arts Box Office at 714-564-5661. For more information on Playing for Time and other Fine & Performing Arts productions, visit the Santa Ana College Web site at www.sac.edu/theatre.
