ARRIVAL AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS IN VILNIUS

By bus

Vilnius' rather depressing bus station (autobusų stotis) is located less than 1km south of Old Town in a less than salubrious, albeit perfectly safe area. Getting to town Get to Old Town in a few minutes by turning left on exiting the station and walking down the hill (Sodų). Countless buses, minibuses and trolleybuses can be found in the immediate area, all going off in different directions around the city and none of them offering a lot of help for people who don't speak Lithuanian. Among the useful services going through the city centre are trolleybus Nº2 and bus Nº1G. Buy a ticket from the driver for 3.50Lt and off you go. Taxis are parked up in a number of places. Be sure to negotiate a fare before you leave. Expect to pay 20Lt or even more for a short trip to Old Town. Calling one in advance is the best option.

By plane

Vilnius International Airport (Tarptautinis Vilniaus Oro Uostas) is just 5km south of the city centre. Even if you're landing from a non-Schengen country, arrival formalities are quick and relatively straightforward. Getting to town A taxi to Old Town using one of the vehicles parked outside the arrivals terminal will cost about 50Lt or possibly considerably more depending on the cheek of the driver. Calling one in advance will cost a lot less. If you don't know how to do it yourself ask the people in the tourist information kiosk to order one for you. If you're travelling to the centre and don't mind roughing it with the locals, save a small fortune and take public transport. The bus stop is to the left of the taxi stand. Bus Nº1 goes to the train station and rapid bus Nº3G to Lukiškių Aikštė and north over the river past the Radisson Blu Hotel Lietuva. A timetable is posted at the stop. Buy a ticket from the driver for 3.50Lt and off you go. Alternatively, hop on a train and in less than 10 minutes be at the train station in the centre of the city. Buy a ticket on board for just 2.50Lt. The airport train station can be found along the road outside the main exit and on the left. Trains leave every hour or so from around 06:00 until 21:30, with a journey time of just seven minutes.

*For additional information about Vilnius airport please visit www.vilnius-airport.lt

By train

The train station (geležinkelio stotis) is fairly large by local standards and unfortunately not very well signposted in English. Getting to town Get to Old Town in a few minutes by going straight ahead on exiting the station and walking down the hill (Sodų). The train station is just across the street from the bus station. See By bus for more information about getting to the centre by public transport.

Vilnius City Public Transport

Vilnius trolley buses and buses start running at 5 in the morning and stop at midnight. Bus times are available at bus stops or on the website www.stops.lt

Once you have boarded public transportation, you can purchase a one way ticket from the driver that costs 3.50 LTL (1 euro). You need to mark the paper ticket at one of the several small red metal ticket validators found on the stands in the bus or by placing it in the yellow electronic ticket validator. If you plan to spend a longer time in Vilnius, get yourself a “Vilniečio Kortelė” – an electronic ticket that costs 4 LTL (1.15 Euros) and can be electronically refilled. It is available at newspaper stands throughout the city and the arrivals area of Vilnius Airport. With a valid ticket in the card, properly activated on board of public vehicle, if necessary, it is possible to change the public transport for free and for unlimited number of journeys. If you came to Vilnius for a short visit, you can buy a one-, three- or ten-days ticket. You can buy and top – up Vilniečio kortelė in all venues marked by sign Vilniečio kortelė. Technically a brilliant idea, the Vilniečio Kortelė is a bit confusing in reality due to the variety of credits its possible to add to it. The two most useful top-up options, available at kiosks around the city, are to top up with either journeys lasting for up to 30 minutes at 2.20Lt a trip or up to 60 minutes for 3.20Lt. These can then be used easily by holding the card against the yellow machine on all buses and trolleybuses which automatically take the fare off the card. Alternatively, put any amount you choose on the card and select which length journey you want when using the machine on board the vehicle.

You can take buses nr. 4G, 5g, 18, 38, trolleybuses 2, 10, 14, 19, 21 till the conference venue. The stop is named "Vilniaus universitetas".

Gediminas’ Tower of the Upper Castle

The Vilnius Castle Museum was opened in 1960, and in 1968 it became a subdivision of the Lithuanian National Museum. The exposition of the Vilnius Castle Museum displays reconstruction models of Vilnius castles of the second part of the 14th and the beginning of the 17th centuries, armament, iconographic material of old Vilnius. An observation deck on the top of the tower is the best place from which to appreciate a magnificent panorama of Vilnius. Where is it? (place on the map)

The Cathedral of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav is the most important place of worship for the country‘s Catholics and the venue for the main Christian, folk and national festivities. In 1922, the Cathedral was granted the title basilica (meaning „royal“). This is the highest church category awarded by the Pope only to very special churches. Gates of Dawn

The Gates of Dawn is one of the most visited shrines in Vilnius that is famous not only in Lithuania but also abroad, worshipped by the representatives of other creeds too. Church of St. Anne

The church of St. Anne is a masterpiece of the late Gothic period. There is no nonsensus about its originator or its construction period. Popular legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte, who was fascinated by the beauty of the church, wanted to take it back to Paris in the palm of his hand. Unfortunately, the reality is not that romantic: during the march of the Napoleonic army through Lithuania, the church was consigned to the French cavalry forces. However, Napoleon did mention in a letter to his wife that „Vilnius is a very beautiful city“. Where is it? (place on the map)

Vilnius University

Vilnius University is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. It was founded at a time when the reformation movement was active in Lithuania and Jesuit monks were invited to help fight the mood of reformation. Jesuit monks were quick to take over education. In 1569, they established a college and in 1579 the University of Vilnius was born.

National Museum of Lithuania

The National Museum of Lithuania is the largest depository of Lithuanian historical cultural heritage in the country. It is the oldest museum in Lithuania, dating back to 1855, when the Museum of Antiquities was established in Vilnius. Authentic exhibits help to recall the history of Lithuania and its national culture and customs. More information http://www.lnm.lt/en/index.php. Where is it? (place on the map)

Vilnius Town Hall

In the 20th century, an art museum was housed in the Town Hall. Today Vilnius Town Hall is a representative building. Many different events are organised at the Town Hall during a year: concerts, literary evenings, presentations of books, exhibitions and festivals. The pediment of the Town Hall is adorned with the coat-of-arms of the city of Vilnius – St Christopher carrying baby Jesus on his shoulders. More information http://www.vilniausrotuse.lt. Where is it? (place on the map)

Presidential Palace

The Presidential Palace, called “Prezidentūra” (President’s Office) in everyday life, was built in the square of Simonas Daukantas (a graduate of Vilnius University and the author of the first history of Lithuania published in the Lithuanian language in the 19th century). More information http://www.president.lt/en/pirmas_174.html. Where is it? (place on the map)

Užupis

Užupis is sometimes compared to Monmartre in Paris or Christiania in Copenhagen. Užupis is a “republic” of artists. It has its own anthem, constitution, president, bishop, two churches, one of the oldest graveyards in Vilnius (Bernardine Cemetery), seven bridges, and a guardian (the bronze angel of Užupis). The constitution of the Republic of Užupis is displayed on a fence at the beginning of Paupio Street. This is one of the oldest districts in Vilnius and is mentioned in historic documents as early as the 16th century.
