GENERAL COMMMENTS
I support the creation of a well-managed network of Marine Protected Areas in Wales, as a contribution to a wider Ecologically Coherent Network around the UK. Well managed Marine Protected Areas are at the heart of marine nature conservation and are essential for the protection of Welsh marine wildlife. As such, I have signed the Wildlife Trusts Petition Fish to show my support for well-managed Marine Protected Areas around the UK.
Welsh seas are rich and diverse, and I support the Wildlife Trusts Living Seas vision for the future of Welsh seas, where marine wildlife thrives from the coastal shallows to the depths of the Irish Sea.
I welcome plans to introduce further protection for the Welsh marine environment, through the Marine Conservation Zone Project Wales. However, instead of the exclusive use of highly protected sites, I encourage Welsh Government to consider the management of new Marine Conservation Zones on a site by site basis. This process should also be used to improve our understanding of how the sea is used in Wales, to inform all future management decisions.
I encourage consideration of a zoned approach through the introduction of larger Marine Conservation Zones, within which small carefully chosen highly protected sites could be created. I believe that this approach would result in greater benefits for the protection of Welsh marine wildlife, as it would protect wider areas of the sea from highly damaging activities. At the same time, this would allow more sustainable, local activities to continue within Marine Conservation Zones, or parts of, with appropriate management in place.
I strongly believe that all highly damaging activities such as scallop dredging and bottom trawling should be prohibited from all Marine Protected Areas. Furthermore, for Living Seas to be achieved, I support the improved management of existing Marine Protected Areas, and call for new sites to be effectively managed with strong enforcement. All protected areas should be adequately monitored and reviewed, with additional sites designated where necessary.
