Example calculations to determine dry matter yield per hectare
Step 1: Calculate the average pasture weight in 5 or more quadrats.
Note: Quadrate 50cm × 50cm
Walk in a straight line placing the quadrat down every 10 paces.
Every time you place the quadrat down, cut the pasture within the quadrat and place into a brown paper bag.
Weigh the contents of the brown paper bags on a set of scales.
For Example
Bag 1 69g
Bag 2 72g
Bag 3 88g
Bag 4 90g
Bag 5 83g
Total 402g
Average the total by the number quadrats cut.
402g ÷ 5 = 80.4g
Times the average weight by 40 to find the pasture yield in kg/ha.
80.4g × 40 = 3216 kg/ha
(Multiple by 40 because there are 4, 50cm × 50cm, in a square meter and 10,000 m2 in a hectare. Then we need to convert the samples weighed in grams to kilograms, so divide by 1000). 4 × 10,000 = 40
1000
Step 2: Determine the Dry Matter (DM) of the samples
For Example: If we estimate 85% dry matter and 15% moisture content of the pasture samples.
3216 kg/ha × 85 = 2734 kg DM/ha
100
or
3216 kg/ha × 85% = 2734 kg DM/ha
