ENS 414-514: Experimental Methods in Nanoscience II

Objective

The objective of the course is to introduce basic experimental methods in nanoscience.

ENS 414/514 focuses on electrical characterization of nanostructures and cryogenics.

Grading

Preliminary works 15%, Lab Reports 35%, Project 30%, Mid-Term Exam 20%.

Lab Hours

Will be schedueled with individual groups.

Lecture: Introduction to the course.

Lecture: General introduction to the characterization of nanostructures.

Basics of electrical characterization techniques on nano-devices.

High sensitivity DC measurement techniques, practical aspects of DC/AC sources and measurement instruments, lock-in amplifiers.

Exp: Labview programming, instrument control and data acquisition.

Lecture: Scanning Electron Microscopy, Focused Ion Beam Lithography, Electron Beam Lithography.

Lecture/Demo: Principles and pratical aspects of cryogenics, cryogenic liquids, their generation and handling. Operation of He4 and He3 cryostats and magnet cryostats. Dilution fridges and ultralow temperatures.

Lecture: Fundamentals of charge transport, Drude model of conductivity, Landauer Büttiker formalism, magneto-transport.

Exp: Analysis of the 0-300 K temperature dependence of the carrier density and conductivity of a metal, a semiconductor and a superconductor.
