Using Gibbs CAM for CNC Milling
Learning Objectives:
Build 3-D geometry with GibbsCAM.
Save Gibbs files as Hurco files (.hnc).
Opening Gibbs
Open GibbsCAM.
( double click on GibbsCAM icon)
Select Right Parameters (make sure wire edm is not checked)
Click check out
C lick OK
Define Stock Size and Properties
S elect Documents Icon
Select 3-Axis Vertical Mill
For Family, select Aluminum Alloys, Wrought.
For Hardness, select 30-80 H.
Highlight Row that starts with 1145,1060, …
Leave Tolerances Alone
Specify Inch
Specify Stock Size
Insert the following values
–X = 0
+X = 1.5
–Y = 0
+Y = 1.5
+Z = 0
–Z = -1
Select New, name and save your new project on the J: drive.
Click the Documents Icon again to hide the box we just used.
Modeling in Gibbs (cumbersome)
S elect Solid Modeling Icon

Select Create Solid

Select Cuboid

Click Stock Dim.
then Do it

You can then cut material using Boolean operations.
Bringing in a Model From a CAD system. (easier)
On Internet Explorer Go to Blackboard, Course Materials then Laboratory and Click and Download the file called sprocket. (Save it somewhere you’ll remember)
(You can save an IGES file in Catia, ProE, NX, Inventor, Solid Works just save your .prt file as an IGES file (.igs).)
In GibbsCAM make sure you have defined your stock size and downloaded the IGES file.
In GibbsCAM Click File > Import then click.
In GibbsCAM Change the “Files of type” drop down menu to IGES (*.igs)
In GibbsCAM Find the saved IGES file and click Open.
Check the Solidify box.
Click Process.
Defining Tools
S elect the Define Tools Option
D ouble Click on the slot marked 1
D efine the type of tool
(Rough End Mill)
D efine the size of the tool
Length of tool(1)
Length of cutting edge (1)
Radius Edge (0)
# Flutes (2)
Tool Diameter (0.25)
After have finished defining
Tool #1. You can define other
tools or you can close the Tool
defining dialog box.
D efine Tool Paths and Manufacturing of Part
S elect the Tool Paths Option
D rag and Drop Surface Machining option to new slot marked 1
D rag Tool 1 onto the new slot marked one
Select Lace Cut and Change to Surface Flow Cut.
S et RPM to 2500
S et Feeds to 5 and 10
S et XY step to .05
Set to ZERO.
Set to Zero
Set to -0.5
N ow go to the top part of the screen and select the surface selection button.
Select the face or faces, on your part, up to which the tool will cut.
Click Do It (a series of red lines will be drawn to indicate your tool paths)
You can make changes to any this section and the surfaces chosen and then push Redo.
Viewing your Part Cut:
C lick on Part Cut Render tool
M ove Animation Speed to center of dial.
P ress Play to view
Watch your part be cut. (Use middle mouse button to rotate part)
Change Tool Specs and Manufacturing Specs as needed and push Redo.
Posting your file:
Download the posting file from blackboard and save it to your desktop
click post button
c lick the post files button
choose your posting file that you downloaded
click the output files button
choose where you want to save your file
press process
once it has saved find the file and change the
extension to .hnc
