Procedures

  1. Before beginning this activity, students should have the following background information:

    • In the Spanish language there are three types of verbs (-AR, -ER and –IR ending) and for each type of verb there are different conjugations depending on the person speaking.

    • The Spanish alphabet contains some letters that aren’t found in the English alphabet. (i.e. Ll and Ñ which require certain pronunciation)

  2. Ask students to brainstorm the various parts of a conversation (i.e. greeting, introduction, dialogue and closing) in English.

  3. Make sure they are equipped with a Spanish/English Dictionary to translate key terms.

  4. Divide the class into groups of two or three.

  5. Instruct the students to formulate a conversation between their partner(s) using basic vocabulary from the first chapter in the textbook.

  6. The students must write the dialogue in Spanish and it must contain at least 5 lines per student in the group.

  7. Once the dialogue is written, the students should rehearse it and prepare to recite in front of their peers to gain practice with pronunciation and grammar.

Independent Practice

Before the next class the students will work independently to complete another assignment. On their own time they must plan a trip to a Spanish speaking country. Using the Internet they must visit at least 3 credible websites and create an itinerary for an imaginary trip to a country of their choice. The sites should offer hotel options, restaurant suggestions, transportation and popular tourist locations. After they have obtained all the necessary information to plan their trip they need to type up the document in Spanish and cite the sources used to create this project.
