1

Peter Did you see that jazz concert on TV last night?

Clare Yeah, it was good, though I prefer to see things like that live.

Peter There’s a jazz festival next month, isn’t there? Aren’t they playing in
the park?

Clare That’s right. Jazz in the Park.

Peter I wouldn’t mind going but I’m off on holiday round about then. What about you?

Clare Well, yeah, I’ve got tickets actually.

Peter Fabulous. Are you going with friends?

Clare Yeah, there’s a group of us.

Peter Should be a good couple of days out.

2

Jane Did you enjoy the show?

Mark Well, let’s just say it was pretty noisy.

Jane The music?

Mark Yes, the music was loud, but it was more the screaming and shouting
from the audience that got me.

Jane You mean they didn’t like it?

Mark No, they loved it. Especially the bit when the clowns came on and
squirted water at the audience. I tell you, it was good, it was funny and there was a great atmosphere, but to be honest, I’m hoping it will be a while before I have to do something like that again.

Jane Maybe you should go to a nice quiet ballet or an opera next time.

Mark Yeah, maybe.

3

Chris I didn’t see you at the show last night. I thought you said you had
tickets?

Linda Well, I did, for me and Ben, but in the end Ben went on his own and I
stayed at home.

Chris That’s a shame. You missed a good night out.

Linda Yeah, well, Jessie my youngest daughter wasn’t too well you see, and I
didn’t want to leave her with a babysitter. So how did it go? Who won?

Chris That young male singer ... what’s his name?

Linda James?

Chris That’s the one, but he was good. He deserved it.

4

Joe How was the ballet?

Ruth Oh, well, don’t talk to me about that.

Joe Why? Wasn’t the performance any good? I read some great reviews
about the show, saying it was outstanding.

Ruth Hmm, I read those too, that’s why it’s so annoying that I didn’t get to
go. Apparently there was an electrical fault in the theatre, so they said it would be dangerous to go ahead. Health and safety, apparently.

Joe Will you get a refund?

Ruth I should hope so, but I’d rather see the show.

5

Tara What was the play like?

Ben Well, I’ve read some mixed reviews about it, but I’ve made up my own
mind now.

Tara So ... tell me.

Ben Where shall I start?

Tara With the acting. Was it really terrible?

Ben No, the acting was reasonable, some of it was pretty good, actually,
but I just think they hardly spent any money on the production as a whole. I mean the set was minimalist, and I mean minimalist, and the costumes consisted of jeans and T-shirts.

Tara Oh, right, well ... that’s different.

Ben Yeah, but I mean, when I think of how much I spent on the ticket ...

Tara Hmm. I see your point.
