ODA PARA EL DÍA DE SANTA CECILIA

From harmony, from heav’nly harmony, De la armonía, de la celestial armonía,

This universal frame began. Este marco universal inicio.


When nature underneath a heap Cuando bajo la naturaleza descansa un torrente

Of jarring atoms lay, De estridentes átomos

And could not heave her head, Y no asirá su cabeza,

The tuneful voice was heard from high: La entonada voz se escuchó de lo alto:

“Arise! Ye more than dead”. ¡Levantaos! Ustedes más que muertos

Then cold and hot, and moist and dry, Entonces lo frío y caliente, húmedo y seco,

In order to their stations leap, Para que sus estaciones salten,

And music’s pow’r obey. Y obedezcan al poder de la música

Through all the compass of the notes it ran, Corrió por las notas de sus compases,

The diapason closing fill in man. El diapasón dará satisfacción al hombre.

What passion cannot music raise and quell! ¡Qué pasiones no eleva y desboca la música!

When Jubal struck the chorded shell, Cuando Jubal tañó la concha encordada

And wond’ring, on the faces fell, Y pensando, en los rostros cabizbajos,

To worship that celestial sound. Para idolatrar aquel sonido celestial.

Less than God they thought there Menos que Dios pensaron que no podrían habitar

could not dwell

Within the hollow of the shell, En el vacío de la concha,

That spoke so sweetly and so well. Que habló tan suave y correctamente.

What passion cannot music raise and quell! ¡Qué pasiones no eleva y desboca la música!

The trumpet’s loud clangor El gallardo toque de trompeta

Excites us to arms Nos arenga a las armas

With shrill notes of anger, Con sus agudas y furiosas notas,

And mortal alarms. Y alarmas mortales.

The double, double, double beat El doble, doble, doble redoble

Of the thund’ring drum Del sonoro tambor

Cries: Hark! The foes come; Exclama: ¡Escucha! Vienen los enemigos;

Charge, charge! ‘tis to late to retreat. ¡Marchad! ¡Marchad! Ya es tarde para retroceder.

The soft complaining flute La suave y suplicante flauta

In dying notes discovers Descubre en notas desfallecedoras

The woes of hopeless lovers, Las penas de los amantes desesperanzados,

Whose dirge is whisper’d by the warbling lute. Cuyo canto fúnebre susurra el laúd.


8. Aria (tenor)


Sharp violins proclaim Proclaman los agudos violines

Their jealous pangs and desperation, sus celosos remordimientos y desesperación,

Fury, frantic indignation, Furia, ansiosa indignación,

Depth of pains, and height of passion, Profundidad de dolores, lo alto de la pasión,

For the fair disdainful dame. Por la bella dama desdeñada.

To join the choirs above. Para unirse a los coros en lo alto.

Orpheus could lead the savage race; Orfeo podrá encabezar la carrera salvaje;

And trees uprooted left their space, Y los altos árboles dejaron su espacio,

Sequacious of the lyre. Secuaces de la lira.


11. Accompagnato (soprano)


But bright Cecilia rais’d the wonder high’r: Pero la brillante Cecilia elevó aún más los poderes:

When to her organ vocal breath was giv’n, Cuando el aliento de su órgano fue ofrendado,

An angel heard, and straight appear’d, Un angel escuchó y súbitamente apareció,

Mistaking earth from heaven. Confundiendo la Tierra por el Cielo.


12. Soprano y coro


As from the pow’r of sacred lays Y por el poder de los estratos sagrados

The spheres began to move, Las esferas iniciaron su movimiento,

And sung the great Creator’s praise Y cantaron la plegaria del Creador

To all the bless’d above; Para aquellos benditos en lo alto;

So when the last and dreadful hour Así que en la hora última y terrible

This crumbling pageant shall devour; Este desmoronado desfile devorará;

The trumpet shall be heard on high, La trompeta se escuchará en las alturas,

The dead shall live, the living die, Los muertos vivirán, los vivos perecerán.

And music shall untune the sky. Y la música desafinará al cielo.
