Commencement Ceremony

Commencement is an open meeting of the Board of Trustees held on the front lawn of Nassau Hall, weather permitting. The ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. and lasts about 1½ hours. The program includes brief speeches by the Salutatorian, the Valedictorian, and the President of the

University, the awarding of degrees to undergraduate and graduate students, the conferring of teaching awards to several New Jersey high school teachers and Princeton University faculty, and conferral of honorary degrees. Individual diplomas are distributed following the ceremony.

Guest seating begins by 9:15 a.m. on the front lawn of Nassau Hall. Admission is by ticket only. Ticket entrances are located on both the east and west sides of front campus and at the gates on Nassau Street. Some standing room is available along the sides of the front lawn of Nassau Hall which does not require tickets.

In case of violent weather (high winds, lightning), Commencement will be held in Jadwin

Gym; the change in location will be announced by 8:00 a.m. on AM radio station WHWH 1350, and FM radio Station WPRB 103.3. For more information call the Commencement Hotline 609-258-2330. The ceremony will be simulcast in McCormick 101; no ticket is necessary for entrance to simulcast sites.

10:15 a.m. Guests should be seated.

No alcohol will be permitted at commencement.

President Shapiro confers the degree, using the traditional Latin formula: Auctoritate mihi a curatoribus Vniversitatis Princetoniensis commissa, vos ad gradum primum in artibus et cum honoribus, ut indicatum est, admitto. "By the authority vested in me by the Trustees of Princeton University, I admit you to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, with honors as indicated." Candidates remain standing until the marshals give the signal to be seated. The same procedure is followed for candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering,

with appropriate amendments.

Conferring of Advanced Degrees. Dean Wilson will ask candidates receiving various degrees to rise and remain standing until the President confers the degrees.

At the conclusion of the program (at approximately 12:30 p.m.), all will stand to sing a verse of Old Nassau.

Please remain seated until recession is completed.

Diplomas. Seniors and advanced degree recipients receive diplomas on Cannon Green. In the event of an indoor Commencement, diplomas will be distributed in the southeast corner of Jadwin Gym.
