ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION NO 28 STATE OF NEW JERSEY 215TH

An Assembly Resolution urging the United States Congress to fund and support the creation of a National Museum of American Latino History and Culture in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Institution.

Whereas, Latinos have resided in present-day America since the founding of St. Augustine, Florida in 1565 by the Spanish; and

Whereas, Latinos have played an integral role in America’s achievement and development, with distinguished contributions in areas such as science, medicine, literature, art, education, the military, business, politics, athletics, film, and music; and

Whereas, The 50 million-plus Latino Americans represent the largest ethnic minority in the United States and are projected to represent 30 percent of the nation’s total population by 2050; and

Whereas, On May 5, 2011, a presidential commission called for the creation of a National Museum of American Latino History and Culture next to the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Institution; and

Whereas, While there are national museums dedicated to African-Americans and Native Americans, there is no national museum dedicated to Latino Americans; and

Whereas, A National Museum of American Latino History and Culture will help foster greater recognition and appreciation for Latinos’ important contributions to American culture and success; and

Whereas, The nation’s increasing diversity and the dramatic growth of the Latino population make the National Museum of American Latino History and Culture an urgent priority; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

1. This House urges the United States Congress to fund and support the establishment of a National Museum of American Latino History and Culture in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Institution.

2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to each member of the United States Congress.

STATEMENT

This resolution urges the United States Congress to fund and support the establishment of the nation’s first National Museum of American Latino History and Culture in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Institution. For over 400 years, Latinos have played an integral role in America’s achievement and development, with important contributions in areas such as science, medicine, literature, art, education, the military, business, politics, athletics, film, and music. A presidential commission recently called on the United States Congress to establish a National Museum of American Latino History and Culture in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Institution. While there are national museums dedicated to other ethnic groups, there is no museum dedicated to American Latinos, despite their being the nation’s largest ethnic minority. In light of the nation’s increasing diversity and the dramatic growth of the Latino population, this resolution urges the United States Congress to establish a national museum dedicated to American Latinos, which will help foster greater appreciation for, and recognition of, Latinos’ contributions to American culture and success.
