T.C. Boyle

1948-

“God knows, Mr. Boyle can write like an angel…In his varied collections we have what we’d hope to find in heaven itself: no lessening of brilliance, plus a couple of laughs to mitigate all that high and distant signing over what goes on below.” (Moore 63)

Thesis A: Defined by “rock-and-roll” individuality and anti- conformist thinking, Boyle emerges with a distinctive literary voice that exposes the flaws of American society and leaves his readers in a moral conundrum.

Essay Map: Boyle’s voice is defined by definitive qualities such as his use of literary devices-- particularly his unique, in-depth characterization--, his profound insight into both the modern and historical American condition, and his social commentary on modern day society.

Thesis B: Ultimately, Boyle’s creative ability to critique and mock modern American society in an effective way makes him a master writer whose best work is destined to become classic and worthy of permanent inclusion in the American literary canon.

Distinctive Traits of Boyle’s Work

  1. Characterization- Boyle’s emerging literary voice is defined by his masterful use of literary devices—most noteworthy is his development of characters looks, actions, and motivations, and he uses those characters to reveal facets of American society.

    1. Literary example: Kyra and her husband Delaney are described as “perfectionists. They abhorred clutter. They were joggers, nonsmokers, social drinkers, and if not full- blown vegetarians, people who were conscious of their intake of animal fats. Their memberships included the Sierra Club, Save the Children, the National Wildlife Federation and the Democratic party” (Tortilla Curtain 34).

    2. Critical quote: “Everything must be exaggerated and vividly animated, the characters of Boyle’s fictions are outrageous and flamboyant. This is pantomime in words, a drama of the obscene and the nearly historical, mimicry… It gives the reader an even greater amount of access into the interior workings of its characters” (Toutonghi 5).

  1. Insight into modern American Condition- The characters of Boyle’s novel, Tortilla Curtain, specifically Kyra and Delaney, expose the abuse of power and the materialism that are associated with privilege.

    1. Literary example: Delaney’s purchasing habits are described as “never buying anything on impulse, but when he did make a major purchase he felt good about it, good about himself, the future of the country and the state of the world. That was the American way. Buy something. Feel good” (Tortilla Curtain 149).

    2. Critical quote: “Tortilla Curtain is a plea for the environment. Boyle is arguing against modern American patterns of consumption, which he attacks as mindlessly self- centered, destructive, and the greatest single threat to life as we know it in this world” (Toutonghi 12).

    3. Literary example: “They [Kyra and Delaney] piled the cart high with bright irresistible packages, things they needed, things they’d run out of, things they might need or never need. Here it was a cornucopian, superabundant, all the fruits of earth gathered and packaged and displayed for their benefit, for them and them alone” (Tortilla Curtain 247).

    4. Literary example: Kyra and Delaney’s neighborhood first gates off their community entrance in order to keep the illegal aliens out, then proceeds to build a stone wall surrounding the community to keep out wild animals and protect their domesticated pets- they are manipulating nature in order to exert their power and protect the prestige of their community

    5. Critical quote: “Mr. Boyle’s perception of what is happening in contemporary America seems remarkably sure and accurate” (Schlotter 64).

  2. Social criticism- In the tradition of American writers who point out the flaws in society, Boyle tries to provide both hope, but also a nihilistic view that we may be too far-gone to fix our flaws.

    1. Literary example: Boyle creates this scenario in order to juxtapose the materialism in society with the absence of even the essentials, but also to provide a point that the only way to fix society’s flaws is to have a fresh beginning. The flood provides hope that the fresh beginning will bring new prosperity after it has eliminated society in one quick motion.

    2. Critical quote: “Boyle raises the question, how is it possible to survive in a society where being part of the solution automatically makes you part of the problem?” (Bull 61).

    3. Critical quote: “Boyle has a vision that man is uniformly, predictably and even fashionably bleak. The point that he relentlessly presses is that man is a foolish creature and that everything ends with death, though some survive longer than others” (Tolson 60).

  3. Master classic work

    1. Calvino quote: Definition of a master: “a classic author that you cannot feel indifferent to, who helps you define yourself in relation to him, even dispute with him” (Calvino 132).

    2. Bloom’s list: Although scholar Harold Bloom does not suggest that Boyle should be part of the American literary canon (because Boyle’s best works were created after Blooms list—he’s too contemporary) the contemporary moral debates that Boyle depicts in his works will earn him a place in the American literary canon (Bloom 516-536).

    3. Critical quote: “His unflinching willingness to consider crucial questions and his dedication to a prose that seeks to eliminate borders even as it entertains place him at the forefront of our modern American novelists. With an ironic humor, and a flair for performance, Boyle fully confronts the confusing and disjunctive matter of postmodern experience” (Toutonghi 16).
