Exchange of Insulation
(Proposal for Solar Keymark regulation for exchanging insulation in solar collectors)

A) Two insulation materials (material OR manufacturer) are considered basically as interchangeable provided that

  1. The specification for lambda do not differ by more than +/- 20%
A test report from an accredited test lab (ISO 8302, ASTM C 177, DIN EN 12667, EN 52612, EN 12664 or similar) must be presented to the SKN.

  2. If there is a coating, it must be considered the same (aluminium sheet, tissues, etc.)

  3. Two collectors of at least 1m2 aperture area must be manufactured each using one of the two insulations under question and the same thickness of insulation. The collector has to pass a reduced test procedure consisting of the two tests as described in EN12975-5.3 (HTR) and 5.4 (Exposure). In this test sequence the stagnation temperature has to be measured according to 5.3. After the test sequence, the collectors have to be inspected and instructive photographs must be taken. Special attention has to be paid to outgassing, burning, melting, scorching and any other phenomena that could i) reduce the overall thermal performance of the collector ii) lead to a reduced lifetime or iii) affect the optical appearance of the collector in an unfavourable way.

  4. If the material is intended for flat plate glazed collectors then the test is valid according to the following table, depending on the glass structure:

Test made with clear glass: Result applies for all cover structures
Test made with sandy glass: Result applies for sandy glass and prismatic glass
Result does not apply for clear glass
Test made with prismatic glass: Result applies for prismatic glass
Result does not apply for sandy and not for clear glass
If the insulation is intended for use with AR coated glass, the assessment tests has to be done with AR coated glass.

  1. The Solar Keymark Network has to approve the equivalence based on the datasheets presented and a report showing the two collectors at the end of the test procedure (including photographs from outside and inside). The test procedure must be accomplished by a Solar Keymark test laboratory.

B) Conditions for changing the insulation in a collector without retesting, if the insulation material has been declared interchangeable by the SKN

  1. The calculated or measured stagnation temperature (whichever is higher) of the collector in which the insulation is to be exchanged, is less than the stagnation temperature (+/-10°C) measured in the above described assessment test procedure.

  2. The change in thickness (specification) is within the following limits
    Thickness up to 10mm: ≤ +/- 2 mm
    Thickness up to 30mm: ≤ +/- 5 mm
    Thickness more than 30mm: ≤ +/- 10 mm

  3. The thermal resistance R (R=d/lambda) shall not differ by more than 5% (d=thickness).

  4. The certifier is informed about the change of insulation or the use of several insulation types.
