Minutes from November 1, 2001

1:00 – 2:00 1202 NC

Meeting called to order at 1:05 PM by Jim Becker, President CSC.

  1. Introductions

  2. Jim introduced our guest speaker, Steve Monaco, Director of the Health Center at Auraria, who presented “Strategies on Complementing Your Health Insurance…..AND SAVING MONEY $$$”. Steve informed CSC of what the Health Center can offer as far as on site X-ray facility; drug outlet which has about 100 prescription drugs; Specialty services like GYN, Ortho, and Psychiatric care; two full time MD board certified in internal medicine, and 6 midlevel providers (4 PA’s and 2 NP’s). Steve stated that the clinic functions primarily on a walk-in basis for availability of same day appointments. Some benefits of using the Health Center include low cost office visits as compared to other facilities, fewer hours of work missed since convenient location on campus, and most emergent visits would be cheaper at the Health Center than an Urgent Care or Emergency Room setting.

Steve wanted everyone to know that the Health Center is available for all students, faculty and staff on the Auraria campus – however, the Health Center at this time should be considered an out-of-network facility and considering most HMO health plans which have a low co-pay, the Health Center can be used merely out of convenience. In the future he will attempt to have the Health Center be an in-network provider – but that may take 1-2 years to complete the process. At this time the Health Center can only see classified employees, but in the future if the Health Center is in-network that would enable children of 18 years or older and spouses to also utilize the Health Center.

Steve introduced Billi Mavromatis, Health Educator at the Health Center. Billi discussed the Healthy Moves Programs that are offered FREE on campus. These services include, but are not limited to, YOGA, Tai Chai, smoking cessation classes, Nutrition counseling, and STRIDES (noontime walks at flag pole).

Steve also announced that flu shots are delayed this year. We expect 800 doses versus our usual 1200 doses in the past. If anyone has an opportunity elsewhere to get a flu shot, take advantage of it. The Health Center has a limited supply and will not be able to get as many people vaccinated. Expected prices are $10 versus $12-$15 in the community.

Q: Would the Health Center be extending its hours of operation with the new coverage?

A: Not likely. The Health Center is student fee funded and we do not anticipate any increase in funding. We can possibly triage clients over the phone to accommodate an appointment later in the day.

Steve asked the audience if they were pleased with their current health care, which led to various discussions of Kaiser and Cigna plans. Upon hearing this Steve stated we should inform personnel about those issues.

Q: Did they discuss remediation?

A: Yes, they talked about the steps you go through. Each person involved can have one representative for them (1:1 ratio). They have to come up with the proof – you don’t have to prove anything. If you don’t know the answer to the questions, you can ask for more time to research the question.
