Exams, Extra Credit, and Grading Scale

  1. There will be three regular Unit exams (see schedule, next page). Unit exams will not be cumulative. However, there also will be a Final Exam (horribly scheduled for SATURDAY Dec. 17, 4:00 pm), which will be cumulative.

  2. Your lowest exam score from the three Unit exams and the fourth Final Exam will be dropped. Your three highest exam scores will be equally weighted and averaged to determine your final course grade. So you can skip the horribly scheduled Saturday 12/17 Final Exam if you’re pleased with your three Unit exam grades.

  3. Exam questions will be multiple choice and true/false. A “practice test” with sample questions will be made available before the first exam to familiarize you with the format. Exams will deal only with material covered in class lectures and on-line lecture outline “handouts”. Much (but not all) of this material also is covered in the recommended textbook readings (see next page). Students will not be tested on any textbook material that is not covered in lecture.

  4. Make-up exams will NOT be given. Missed exams, including the cumulative Final Exam, will earn a grade of “0”, which can be dropped as your lowest grade [see (2), above]. Students with documented exam conflicts should discuss the conflict with me at least 1 week before the scheduled exam. An earlier exam may then be arranged, depending on the circumstances. Acceptable conflicts include University-related competitions and conferences, scheduled surgery (yours), etc. Weddings, vacations, visiting relatives, etc. won’t qualify. If you miss an exam because you are sick or get stuck in traffic or miss your bus, etc., that can be the one you “drop”. In that case, remember that you will have to take the Final Exam, so you’ll still be tested on the material.

  5. EXTRA CREDIT: Three extra credit “pop quizzes” will be administered without prior notice, at the end of a regular lecture period. Quiz questions will be multiple choice and true/false. Points earned on these quizzes can ONLY help you. All points earned will be treated as extra credit at the end of the course to thereby increase your final average. An example of this extra credit calculation is provided on the course website; be sure you understand how it works so there’s no confusion at the end when you want to know how your grade stands. Make-up bonus quizzes will NOT be given, even for the most compellingly excusable absence.

  6. EXTRA HELP: In addition to the optional weekly review, students are encouraged to contact the instructor or graduate TAs to arrange individual appointments. Our time is flexible, and we’re happy to meet with you. However, please plan to attend the weekly review as your first resource, if possible, before scheduling an individual appointment. There are no formal office hours.

  7. GRADING SCALE

Numerical Avg. Letter Grade

98.0 - 100 A+

93.0 - 97.9 A

90.0 - 92.9 A-

88.0 - 89.9 B+

83.0 - 87.9 B

80.0 - 82.9 B-

Numerical Avg. Letter Grade

78.0 - 79.9 C+

73.0 - 77.9 C

70.0 - 72.9 C-

68.0 - 69.9 D+

63.0 - 67.9 D

60.0 – 62.9 D-

59.9 or less F

NOTE: When computing final letter grades at the end of the course, I will automatically add 0.5 points to everyone’s numerical average (after including extra credit) to resolve borderline cases. I won’t add more than that, even if your final adjusted average is then 0.01 points away from that next higher level! I must be strictly objective, although I will commiserate with you.

Course Outline – Fall 2011

Note that page numbers provided below refer to textbook readings that will help you understand and integrate the lecture material. If you want to earn an A in this course, I advise you to do the recommended reading BEFORE each lecture. However, much of the suggested reading includes information that I won’t have time to cover in class, or material that may come up only in later lectures. Rest assured that you will ONLY be tested on material I present in class, including material contained within outlines/handouts posted online.

UNIT I – nuts and bolts

UNIT II – essential neural systems

UNIT III – higher level functions

FINAL EXAM: SATURDAY December 17, 4:00 pm - 5:50 pm, L9 Clapp Hall (same room).
IMPORTANT: For all exams, including the final, please note that students who arrive late will not be permitted to take the exam if any other student has already finished and left the room.
