Major in French and Francophone Studies
The French major consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours (10 courses) at the 2000 level or above in French, plus 12 credit hours at the 2000-level or above in “related courses,” courses from departments other than French and Francophone Studies.
For French and Francophone Studies the major will be composed as follows:
18 credits from the core courses and 12 credits from one of the specialized track: “French for the Global Community” or “French Cultural and literary studies”. We allow one substitution, meaning a course from track 1 can be taken from track 2, and vice versa.
Study abroad in our Paris program is required for a semester or a year.

Students must also complete four courses from “related” disciplines (art history, Romance Languages, Human Rights, European studies, Political Science, Anthropology, etc.). Please check with your advisor to their consent for your selection of related courses.\
To satisfy the writing in the major and information literacy requirements, all majors must take any two of the following : FREN 3261W, 3262W, and 3268W.
Major Total=30 FREN credits plus 12 related credits all at the 2000 level or higher
Enrollment in Education Abroad in Paris is required. In exceptional circumstances and only in consultation with the advisor, this requirement may be substituted with additional French credits taken in residence.
Any of the Major courses can be replaced by a FREN 3293 from Paris.
A minimum of 12 of the major credits must be taken in residence.
UConn’s Early College Experience courses may be counted towards the major.
A single course cannot satisfy more than one requirement.
Declaring a major
After meeting with a French advisor, majors can be declared electronically at the following website: http://ppc.uconn.edu/. They are entered by CLAS and once on a student’s record, confirmation email will be sent. From there, student may submit a final plan of study.
