IEEE NZ North Section
Chair’s Report 21 July 2011
Over 7–11 July, Auckland was the venue for probably the biggest IEEE event that has taken place in the Section, namely the R10 Student, WIE and GOLD Congress. I was privileged to attend some of the sessions and came away thoroughly impressed with the content and organisation of this congress, which I believe has set a benchmark for future events to match. The Group representatives will be sharing their experience with us later in the Section Committee Meeting.
Morteza has kindly accepted the position of Web Page Refresh Sub Committee Chair and will be sharing the project progress with us later in this and subsequent Section Committee Meetings.
In view of the importance of the above two items, the Group Reports will be entirely wiki based for this meeting, to allow the time the Student Congress and Web Page Refresh warrant.
I signalled earlier that I intended the Section to undertake a ‘ground up’ Strategic Planning Meeting in 2012 to re-evaluate the Section’s role in the 21st Century. The current Strategic Plan was developed last century and, with minor updates, has served the Section well. However, to ensure the Section remains relevant to its members’ needs, I can confirm that Loreen Ozolins will be leading us in a workshop as the first meeting of 2012. The shape of the workshop has yet to be decided, but it is likely to be a half-day or more, possibly a Saturday. All 2012 volunteers will be urged to attend as part of their 2012 commitment. The plan developed in the workshop will be implemented in the 2013 year. Since the first meeting of 2012 will be purely Strategic Planning, we need to start the 2012 Budget process early, with the aim of completing it before the end of 2011. Please submit your 2012 plan to Patrick by 8 September to enable a draft Budget to be presented at the 22 September Section Committee Meeting. The 2012 Budget can then be confirmed at the 25 November Committee Meeting.
I will be out of NZ from 8 August until 27 August, part of the time being spent at 2011 Sections Congress in SFO. I welcome any input by email or for a few minutes at the end of the Chair’s Report section of the Agenda with items to take to the Congress, even if they are items to be raised informally if the opportunity arises.
