IV. ENHANCEMENTS
***********************************
* Retaining driver settings during upgrade
When upgrading to these drivers, where applicable, many of the current driver settings will be retained in the new driver. To ensure that the settings are retained, use the following process to upgrade the drivers:
Download the driver from the web, and unzip the driver files into the desired location.
From the Start menu Settings Printers
Double click the Printer Icon for the printer driver that you want to upgrade.
From the Printers menu, select “Properties”.
Select the Details tab, and click “New Driver”
Select “Have Disk” and browse to the location of the downloaded, unzipped driver files. Once the new driver has been installed you will be returned to “Details” tab of the driver.
In order to preserve the settings from the previous driver, you must click “OK” and close the driver UI.
The following must be true for the driver features to be retained during an upgrade:
The driver being upgraded must be an HP driver. The new driver must be the same type (PCL 5 e/c, PCL 6 or PS) as the one being upgraded.
The new driver is for the same product as the one that is being upgraded.
The new driver is for the same operating system as the one being upgraded.(This feature is not supported on Windows 95).
The version of the driver being upgraded is equal to or greater than the version number listed below:

NOTE: During a printer driver installation using the Add Printer Wizard, if the driver of the same name is already installed, the Wizard will ask you to either keep the existing driver, or replace the existing driver. Assuming that all of the conditions are met for the current and new driver then selecting to replace the existing driver will cause the existing driver to be upgraded and will retain the driver settings. The "Copy 2" driver will be the new driver version, but will not have any of the old driver settings.
* Performance:
There are numerous performance enhancements for these drivers - particularly for the time is takes for a driver UI to appear when selecting "Print" within an application, for changing to different HP driver within the Print Dialog drop-down list or when selecting "Properties" from the Print Dialog box. There are also improvements in the time is takes for an application to load when one of these drivers is set as the default. Finally, there is some improvement in print speed when using this driver in certain applications.
* User Mode driver Architecture for Windows 2000:
These drivers have been developing using the User Mode (also called Version 3) driver architecture for use in Windows 2000. This architecture provides a more stable environment as there is less interaction between the core operating system and driver files. The Kernel Mode (also called Version 2) driver architecture still exists for use in the Windows 9x and ME platforms as well as Windows NT4.0.
* Accessing Watermarks in a shared printer environment:
In some cases, watermarks in a shared environment were not available to users that did not have administrator privileges. This enhancement ensures all users will have access to the Watermark feature.
* Username inserted, via PJL comment, into print data stream for job accounting applications.
* Additional PCL 5e commands that will provide for the handling of multiple custom paper sizes
