NVCS Homework Policy

NVCS Homework Policy

(Amended 8/19/15)

NVCS does not require teachers to assign homework, but does permit teachers to assign homework under the following guidelines.

1. Homework should primarily be one of three types, unfinished classroom work, practice, or enrichment, with the type of homework assigned to a particular child determined by her or his needs at the time of the assignment. Parents and teachers should work together to make this determination.

2. Homework should reflect current classroom objectives and should have specific goals for advancing the academic performance of the particular student. The teacher will identify the goals when making the assignment.

3. Homework should provide the opportunity for families to become informed about and involved with the student's school activities. Families are encouraged to assist students with homework assignments.

4. To give priority to family activities and extracurricular activities, when possible homework should be assigned several days in advance of the due date. However, in preparation for the next scholastic environment for our seventh and eighth graders, homework may be assigned on a nightly basis.

5. The average amount of nightly homework, including preparing for regular tests, should not exceed 5 minutes for primary, 10 minutes for intermediate, 20 minutes for upper intermediate, and 40 minutes for upper. There is no minimum amount of homework assigned.

6. In addition to teacher assigned homework, NVCS expects each student do the following at home:

Read or have someone read to him or her daily.

Maintain an awareness of current events at a level appropriate for her or his maturity, and in a manner consistent with her or his family's values.

Engage in writing weekly, either through personal correspondence with a friend or family member, or through journaling.

*•

Regularly use math and reasoning skills with activities such as board or card games, shopping, or cooking.
