Pre-Intermediate Unit 2: Tom and Whiskers the Cat
Narrator: My siblings were very different when we were teenagers. I have an older sister named Susan and a younger brother named Tom. Both of them are now in their thirties. When we were teenagers, Susan was determined to become a great violinist. She was dedicated to learning her instrument. She practiced the violin daily. Her goal was to play classical music in a symphony orchestra. She was very hard-working and self-disciplined. By the age of twenty-three, Susan was earning money playing music. She was living her dream. Tom, on the other hand, was NOT so hard-working. He was a bit lazy, but very sweet. He left school when he was sixteen and got a job at a supermarket. Tom didn’t have any big goals in life. He just let life take its course. He was somewhat lonely, so one day I bought him a cat. He was a lovely cat. Tom was overjoyed. He had furry, round body and unusually long whiskers.
Tom: I know! I’ll name him Whiskers!
Narrator: Whiskers was a very friendly cat with a nice personality. He was also very clever, so Tom taught him to do some tricks. He was always cheerful when he played with Whiskers. Tom and Whiskers lived together in a small flat for four years until one tragic night. Unfortunately, Tom was tired after a long day working at the market and he forgot to close the front door. Tragically, Whiskers ran out of the front door and into the street. A car that was passing by didn’t see Whiskers, and slammed into Tom’s beloved companion. Whiskers died instantly.
Tom: It was a horrible experience. I was devastated. After Whiskers died, I was miserable. I realized that he was my only close friend in life. I knew I needed to do something to turn my life around, so I asked my sister for help.
Narrator: Susan was really helpful to Tom. She told Tom to use his talents. She said, “Tom, you are a talented, lovely, and patient young man. Why are you just working to survive? What are your goals in life? Let me help you!”
Susan and Tom made a plan for Tom’s future. Susan’s inspirational words echoed inside Tom’s head. Susan said, “Be patient, hard-working, and dedicate your life to helping stray cats. This will give your life purpose and it will be a living memorial to Whiskers the cat.”
Now, ten years later, Tom runs an animal shelter called Living Free. They save stray and injured animals. They never euthanize the animals. They have an army of volunteers who help nurse these animals back to health. Once these animals are healthy, Tom finds homes for them. Living Free is funded entirely by donations from the local community.
