Maintaining your Status
RVT’s are required to accumulate fifteen (15) continuing education hours over a one (1) year period & maintain membership in their provincial association in order to maintain their registered status. Those individuals who have written and passed the National Exam and have not acquired the 15 CE hours must rewrite the examination to regain their registered status.
**Please note: Files cannot be updated if membership is not kept current.
Continuing Education credits must be related to the Veterinary Technician profession and will be awarded as listed below:
Conferences (full or half day) and seminars 1.0 hour for each hour of learning
Published article (non peer reviewed) 2.0 hours
Published article (peer reviewed article) 10.0 hours
Public Education (to promote profession)* 1.0 hour for each hour of presentation
+ 1.0 hour preparation time
Guest Speaking (AHT related functions)* 1.0 hour for each hour of presentation
+ 1.0 hour preparation time
Quizzes (TechLife, TechNews,
Veterinary Technician) 0.5 hour/quiz
TechNews quizzes must be sent to the OAVT for marking. Veterinary Technician quizzes must be sent back to the magazine for marking. REMEMBER TO ALLOW 6-8 WEEKS TO PROCESS YOUR RESULTS!!
EVTA meetings 1.0 hour
EVTA accepts RACE hours - One RACE hour is equal to 1 EVTA CE hour
Other ** To be reviewed by CE Coordinator
*Guest speaking and public education may not account for more than seven (7) of your 15 total hours. These activities must be volunteer in nature – paid speaking will not be accepted.
**CE opportunities not previously assessed by the EVTA must be submitted to the CE coordinator one (1) month in advance to determine value. If this process is not followed, the EVTA may not issue credit for the event.
Individuals must contact the CE Coordinator to discuss extenuating circumstances which prevent them from acquiring their CE credits. The executive will review these circumstances and if deemed worthy, a “grace period” may be granted. Terms of the grace period will be set on an individual basis.
