SENATE RESOLUTION
In Memory
of
Wanda Struve Gilvin
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Amarillo in mourning the loss of Wanda Struve Gilvin
who died January 4, 1995, at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, Born in Plainview, Texas, Wanda Struve married
L. P. "Pete" Gilvin in 1939, and the couple was blessed with
a long and happy union; and
WHEREAS, Wanda Gilvin was dedicated to her work as a
homemaker and as a public school music teacher until her
retirement; and
WHEREAS, Highly respected in the community for her many
accomplishments, Mrs. Gilvin was an exemplary and distinguished
lady and a well‑known civic leader; and
WHEREAS, She was a board member for the Amarillo Symphony
and was active with other cultural organizations including the
Lone Star Ballet, the Amarillo Little Theatre, and the Amarillo
Museum of Art; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Gilvin were noted philanthropists
who contributed to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, the Don and
Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, the Panhandle‑Plains Historical
Museum, and the West Texas A&M University Foundation; they
also contributed to the Presbyterian Children's Home and
The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Gilvin established and supported a
scholarship program through a national contractors' association
and supported the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation which
produces "Texas"; they gave their extensive collection of Texana
to the Carson County Square House Museum; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Gilvin were honored by the Amarillo
Chamber of Commerce for their support of the arts and were
presented twice with the Golden Nail Award; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Wanda Gilvin gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew her; and
WHEREAS, Wanda Gilvin was a devoted wife and a talented
individual who lived her life to the fullest, and she leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family
and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of Wanda Struve Gilvin: her husband,
L. P. "Pete" Gilvin; and her brother, Arno Struve; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Wanda Gilvin.
