COURSE REQUIREMENTS

BIOCHEMISTRY COURSE ORGANIZATION

AND REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE COURSE


DEPARTMENT INTERNAL REGULATIONS (2014/2015 and 2015/2016)


1. Classes in biochemistry for the I year Medical Faculty students are conducted in accordance to the plan provided by the Dean with the teaching load of 40 hours of laboratories and 10 hours of seminars in summer semester and 40 hours of laboratories and 10 hours of seminars in winter semester.

2. The laboratories are divided into thematic sections (three sections in each semester).

3. During the first laboratory the students are acquainted with laboratory regulations, safety instruction, course organization and requirements necessary to complete the course.

4. In order to obtain a credit for biochemistry it is compulsory to get a credit for all thematic sections:

obtain a positive grade for all laboratory exams covering both theoretical and practical material concerning the given section.

actively participate in seminars

properly conduct the experiments designed in the course plan (taking into account §12 subparagraph 3 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies “Student has a right to miss up to 10% of obligatory classes in a given subject without giving any explanation of the absence and without the necessity to repeat these classes”).

return all the laboratory equipment and leave the working station in order after each laboratory.

5. Laboratory exams are taken during the time designed for the laboratory:

in a short oral or written form (entry tests) before each laboratory and covering the material concerning both the experiment conducted in a given day and theoretical material required in a given thematical section.

in oral or written form (essay or test), during the last classes of each section and embracing theoretical as well as practical material covering the whole section.

(The students who did not pass an entry test will receive additional questions covering the practical material on lab exam ending a given laboratory section;

positive grade from the lab exam is required to obtain a credit for a given section )

repeat of the laboratory exam (second term) – in the next week, during the first laboratory of a new section

the third term for the students who took the lab exam twice and did not obtain a positive grade will take place in the last week of classes in a given semester. According to the §28 subparagraph 3 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies “A student who did not obtain positive grades from the required partial exams has a right to take exam covering the whole material included in a program of a given subject”

6. Students' attendance at the classes is compulsory. The leave of absence certificate must be presented to the person supervising the classes on the first classes after the cessation of the cause of absence. The laboratories on which the student was absent because of justified reasons must be conducted at a later date (taking into account §12 subparagraph 3 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies).

7. The student, who didn't complete some of the laboratories can conduct them after the conclusion of all of the laboratories designed for a given semester. The right to repeat the laboratories is granted to students who:

didn't get the satisfactory result of the experiment.

were absent from the classes because of the justified reasons (leave of absence).

have maximum 3 uncredited laboratories.

8. A credit for all the laboratory sections is a prerequisite for participation in final exam in biochemistry.

9. Final exam in biochemistry is in a form of a test consisting of both single-choice and open questions (both first term second-chance and a third term exam).

The students who want to take the exam earlier, can participate in pre-term exam, taking place before the beginning of the examination session (according to §29 subparagraph 2 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies), which is also in a test form and counts as a first term of the exam.

10. Students, who completed all the laboratories (taking into account §12 subparagraph 3 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies) and passed all the laboratory exams in a first term and obtained the sum of grades equal at least 24, are granted additional points to the points obtained on final exam test, according to the following rules:

The additional points are added on the first term exam only.

11. The student, who, because of justified reasons, is not present on the first term of final exam should inform the person responsible for the exam within three working days from the date of the exam about the reason of absence (taking into account §29 subparagraphs 12-13 of Wrocław Medical University Regulations of Studies).

The original of leave of absence should be left in the Dean Office and a copy at the secretarial office of the Department immediately after the cessation of the cause of absence.

In case the leave of absence is considered justified the student is assigned a new exam date during the examination session or, in a case of prolonged illness, during the second-chance session.

12. All the information concerning the program, organization and plan of course as well as the terms of course evaluation is accessible to Students on information boards in the Medical Biochemistry Department and on the Internet page www.bioch.am.wroc.pl

13. The above rules of Medical Biochemistry Department Internal Regulations are based on "Wrocław Medical University studies Regulations " approved by the University Senate for academic year 2013/2014
