INDY 500


“INDY 500 “ JEFF GORDON AND TONY STEWART MAY Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart may be able to drive 500 miles, but you can become a stronger reader by reading 500 pages!!!”


Indy 500 is our independent classroom reading program. You will track the pages of novels you read on your own and you are responsible for reading 500 pages by the end of each quarter. You will be given about one class period of time each week to read, but you should also be completing your INDY reading outside of just Literature and Composition time. You are expected to have an INDY book with you at all times because other team teachers may offer additional INDY read time.


There are no required genres for each quarter, but you should be reading books that are at the 8th grade level or higher. Your INDY choices should be engaging, but also challenge you to push yourself as a reader.


1st Quarter:

500 pages due by Friday, October 11th


2nd Quarter:

500 pages due by Friday, December 13th


3rd Quarter:

500 pages due by Friday, March 6th


4th Quarter:

500 pages due Friday, May 8th



You can read as many books as necessary to reach your 500 page mark.


Grading for INDY 500:


-There will be no weekly standards based grade, but your progress will be monitored and INDY grades will be determined at the end of each quarter.


-You must always read a new book to you that is at or above 8th grade reading level; you cannot read a book for INDY that you have read before!!!! You cannot turn in a book that you have only partially read to reach 500 pages.


-Your INDY standards based grade is weighted the most in your Literature and Composition class, so you should always be exhibiting your best work and reading each text critically.



-When you finish a book, you will complete one INDY assignment to demonstrate that you have read and understood the book. You must complete ONE INDY activity for every book you have read to reach your 500 page goal.

Book Talk in front of the class

Letter to Mrs. Shanks discussing the book

-You may go over 500 pages for the quarter to earn a 4 as your standards based grade. The only way to receive extra credit is to complete an INDY activity for each additional book.

  1. Fill out a story map, sign up for a book talk, or write a letter to your teacher about the book.


  1. Give your assignment to Mrs. Shanks.


  1. Continue with steps 1-4 until you have read 500 pages and completed the last book.
