Your Questions About Anthrax

To: Faculty and Staff

Subject: Your Questions about Anthrax

From: [Name Here]

Although reports of exposure to Anthrax have been relatively few, and isolated, there has been extensive coverage of those incidents in the media. It is understandable that members of the [District Name] community would like to know if the [District Name] has been threatened in any way, and also to know what steps are being taken to deal with an Anthrax incident, should there be one. Additionally, we have received several requests for information concerning steps that can be taken to minimize the risks of exposure.

Let me begin by confirming that [Responsible party/department] has not been informed of any threats against [District Name] or any member of our community. Should there be a threat, we would notify local authorities immediately. There are some simple steps that each of us can take to minimize risk of potential infection when handling mail.

Letters or packages with the following indicators or characteristics should be treated as suspect, especially if they are not expected.

1. No Return Address

2. Restrictive Marking such as "Personal" or "Special Delivery"

3. Possibly Mailed from a Foreign County

4. Excessive Postage

5. Misspelled Words

6. Addressed to Title Only or Incorrect Title

7. Badly Typed or Handwritten

8. Package or Letter is Lopsided or Uneven

9. Wire Protrude from Package or Letter

10. Letter is inappropriately Rigid or Bulky

11. Strange Odor

12. Wrong Title with Name

13. Oily Stains, Discolorations, or Crystallization on Wrapper

14. Excessive Tape or String

If you receive unexpected letters or packages with the listed indicators, you should do the following:

1. Handle with care. Don't shake or bump.

2. Isolate the package or letter and look for the listed indicators.

3. Don't Open, Smell, or Taste.

4. Treat it as Suspect and, from a campus phone, call [Responsible party/department] at [Phone Number].

[Responsible party/department] should be called when any suspicious letter or package is received. [He/She/They] will coordinate responses from all appropriate agencies.
