Responding to Resistance Checklist


Purpose/Definition: Resistance to change is common, even if the outcome is desired. This tool helps to address the emotional issues related to change. Used to address the issues of resistance that may surface during implementation of your project. Useful when resistance to change prevents implementation of solutions and/or when you need broader buy-in than initially anticipated to accomplish the change. Helpful in the Analyze, Improve and Control phases.

  1. Anticipate resistance and potential responses.

  2. Complete form based on your specific project.

    1. Identify the type of resistance

    2. Identify the type of response to use

    3. Try the response

    4. Re-assess the resistance after use of the response

    5. Repeat as needed

Surprise (shock, disbelief)
