Job Description

Position Title: Mental Health Ministry Coordinator:

The mission of this ministry is to provide an environment where people living with mental illness can meet, share their experiences and their Catholic faith with others, and to grow spiritually closer in their relationship with God. It also supports the parents, family members, and friends of those who are supporting a loved one who is experiencing mental illness by providing assistance in finding educational and other support services to aid in their understanding of mental illness.

Our goal is to provide a place to speak out and be heard in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment, where isolation and stigma dissipate as supportive community is created.

The overall plan is to develop, form, train and maintain Mental Health Ministry (MHM) groups and leadership teams within the Diocese of __________ based on a model currently being implemented at ______________.

The Coordinator is responsible for the planning and development, the coordination and implementation, the training and ongoing maintenance of the overall plan.

 Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Support the development of a Mental Health Ministry Advisory Group (MHMAG) to:

    • provide guidance, advice and assistance in the planning and rollout process including the recommendation of parishes appropriate for the program;

    • to review processes, documentation and materials;

    • to review the progress of the groups during the initial stages of the rollout and recommend changes where needed;

    • to provide additional communication to the groups as needed.

  2. Communicate and implement the recommendations of the MHMAG.

  3. Plan, coordinate, and implement MHM groups for the parishes that have been identified and selected to participate in the development of the mental health ministry program. Support the resolution of any participating member or meeting issues arising from the development, rollout or on-going status.

  4. Support the recruitment and selection of the Team Leaders and Members at each participating parish.

  5. Responsible for the development and implementation of the leadership training plan. Facilitate shared learning across parish communities among leadership teams.

  6. Support the rollout of the MHM groups within the selected parishes by providing destigmatizing information about mental health to educate and promote mutual support and understanding.

  7. Meet with the Team leadership on a periodic basis to review progress, gather appropriate data to evaluate the effectiveness of the groups. Make and communicate adjustments and changes as needed.

  8. Post implementation, maintain an on-going relationship with Team Leadership groups to provide additional guidance, support and training as needed, as well as providing opportunities for spiritual meditations and reflections on mental health ministry.

  9. Communicate effectively with parishes, priests, and other diocesan departments as well as other mental health community partners to implement this plan and regarding mental health ministry in general (in-person meetings/trainings, email, phone, newsletters, website).

  10. Assist with coordinating Mental Health Ministry events, trainings, and volunteer opportunities at the diocesan and parish level as needed.

  11. As needed, support the efforts to secure grants that will fund the overall plan. Support the development and tracking of expenses as required.

  12. Attend additional training, as needed, to support the development and maintenance of the MHM.

  13. Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with other external Mental Health Ministry programs to exchange information and share ideas and best practices

  14. Perform other mental health ministry-related tasks as necessary.

  15. Assumes other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:

  1. Must be self-motivated

  2. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, especially listening

  3. Ability to present oneself professionally

  4. Good organizational and leadership skills

  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality in group meetings and relationships with participating members

  6. Sensitive to and supportive of leadership in the parish and the diocese

  7. Awareness of boundaries, including ethical and moral ones

  8. Ability to educate adults in small and large group settings

Special Knowledge and/or Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated personal commitment to gospel values and a concern for ones own spiritual development and the spiritual dimensions of the ministry with ability to discuss spiritual issues relating to a person’s faith e.g. anger, hope, suffering, trust, sin, forgiveness, etc. and share personal stories of faith and spirituality.

  2. Demonstrated ability to adapt the ministry to meet the needs of the diocese by resolving problems, answering questions, and addressing concerns promptly and effectively

  3. Ability to work with clergy at all levels: pastoral and Archdiocesan

  4. Knowledge of and appreciation for varied cultures represented in the parish communities of the Archdiocese of Hartford

  5. Must have a commitment to individuals with mental health issues

Educational Requirements:

  1. Must have a working knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith and tradition as well as familiarity with its structures, functions and institutions.

  2. Five or more years of experience required in a social service or related field

  3. Knowledge of Behavioral Health issues, services and support systems – local and National

  4. Mental Health Minister Training

  5. Mental Health First Aid Training

Working Environment:

  1. Will work in urban and suburban settings visiting parishes throughout the archdiocese

  2. Weekend and evening work hours may be required

  3. Valid Driver’s License and good driving record are required  

  4. Reports to the Director of the Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry
