Director of Youth Ministry

DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY


Job Description


Purpose of Position:


The Director of Youth Ministry at Bethel CRC shall be a mature Christian, committed to the Reformed faith, who will work with the youth of Bethel to help them grow in their faith in Christ. The Director will help the youth develop a faith that is based on a commitment to God’s Word and in prayer. The Director will complement the senior pastor’s ministry and will work to instill in the youth an understanding of the importance of worship and of fearing God and obeying His Word. The Director will also aid the youth in understanding their role within the church body and encourage them towards profession of faith and full membership within the body of believers.



Responsibilities:


  1. Primary---Youth


        1. Encourage faith development and growth among the young people, providing guidance and instruction through group meetings or one-on-one visits. Be especially sensitive to those with special needs or concerns in their lives, providing correction when needed and seeking help from education committee, elder or pastor as situations dictates.


        1. Prioritize relational ministry, including regular office hours, annual one-on-ones with each youth as well as regular visits with youth families.


        1. Develop lesson plans and lead large group meetings, two each month, with a teaching based on God’s Word. Communicate the lesson plan to YPS leaders in advance.


        1. Work to equip and empower YPS volunteer leaders in relational ministry and discipleship skills. Partner with the YPS leaders to plan, implement and lead activities for the year.


        1. Attend annual SERVE trips and retreats (i.e. Youth Unlimited and Minn-I-Kota activities) for the Bethel Youth group.


        1. Organize and facilitate intergenerational interactions between the youth and the rest of Bethel’s congregation (i.e. game nights with elderly, bake-off partnerships, prayer partners, nursing home visits, etc.).


        1. Liaison with the Worship Planning Committee in the planning of any youth worship service and work with the Worship Committee to have the youth regularly involved in worship services as well as the whole life of the church.


        1. Supervise possible interns (from Dordt, NW, etc.) and report to their instructor.


        1. Support local high schools (i.e. attending chapel, leading a chapel, etc.).


        1. Facilitate good communication with YPS volunteer leaders, students, parents, and the broader congregation (e-mails, texts, bi-monthly newsletters, etc.)


        1. Provide leadership to the Junior High Youth Group, including working to develop the young adult leadership team and facilitate the program twice a month.


  1. Secondary----Other Ministries


  1. Monitor and develop post-high ministry programs and opportunities to meet the needs of our post-high members as well as outreach to those in the community.


  1. Actively participate in other areas of Bethel ministry and church life (i.e. Children and Worship, teaching catechism, Christian Ed. Fundraisers, etc.).


Qualifications:


  1. Be a professing member of Bethel CRC and provide good leadership by being actively involved through regular attendance of worship services and a supporter of the ministry at Bethel.

  2. Shall exhibit a life, both publicly and privately, of genuine faith, hope and love in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. Display a deep sense of call to youth ministry and demonstrate a teachable spirit, a life of prayer, a deep engagement with Scripture, and a humble servant heart.

  3. Must possess the ability to articulate a Reformed world-and-life view, and be committed to the life and ministry of the CRC in North America, acknowledging the truths of Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession and Canons of Dort.

  4. Must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, demonstrate the required spiritual gifts for educational ministry, and be willing to engage in ongoing professional development.

  5. Exhibit an outgoing personality and a willingness to attend social and extracurricular activities of Bethel’s young people.


Accountability:


  1. To the council at Bethel:


  1. The Director of Youth Ministry will be accountable to the Council of Bethel and will be directly supervised by the Senior Pastor.


  1. Report to council annually via an annual performance review and 360 Degree Feedback to identify in writing their personal and ministry goals.


  1. Meet twice a year with the council to discuss the program and progress on goals.


  1. Serve as a member of the Bethel Education Committee.


  1. The Pastor and Elders:


  1. Meet regularly with the pastor for coordination of duties and mutual encouragement.


  1. Meet the elders as needed or if asked by education committee to share an issue with the elders.


  1. Attend staff meetings held every other week.


  1. To the Deacons:


  1. Annual review of salary with representatives from the deacons.


  1. To the Congregation:


  1. Include written bi-monthly updates in the newsletter regarding YPS program and other aspects of ministry.


  1. Provide an annual report at congregational meeting and be available to answer questions from the congregation.



Professional Development:


  1. As part of yearly performing review, submit in writing an annual proposal for continuing education. Proposal to include attendance at a conference/workshop and a list of reading materials consistent with ministry responsibilities.

  2. As noted in the yearly performance, submit a written summary of what was learned/gained from continuing education during the previous year.
