Cover Submission Guidelines

Cover Submission Guidelines

All authors of accepted manuscripts are welcome to submit potential cover images that are both artistically striking and scientifically informative. A submission may be based on or resemble figures in the articles to be included in a particular issue. Authors are welcome to submit several different images for consideration. Both the aesthetic quality of the image and the scientific significance of the related study will be considered when a selection is made. The following criteria can be considered when submitting files:

A permission of the copyright holder of any copyrighted images must be provided.

Images similar to figures from the manuscript should be reproduced and significantly modified to provide the aesthetic quality typically required for cover images.

Authors are encouraged to include the headlines and legends to help the journal editors to select their submissions as cover images.

Authors are also encouraged to use the cover image template below to create their cover image layout with the journal’s logo and headline. When doing so, all image layers should be preserved, not flattened.

Images that are not selected for cover use may be used for Molecular Plant or other Cell Press websites and in social media. Authors’ contribution for such images will be acknowledged.

Molecular Plant currently does not have in-house graphic designers. For that reason, we may go back to your author group for desired revisions before our cover deadline or use the original submission you provide to us.

File Submission Checklist

Please provide all of the following when submitting cover files:

A high-resolution PSD or TIF file for each submission (please ensure that headlines, etc., are on separate, removable layers)

A suggestion for an image headline (the average headline is 5 to 8 words long).

A cover image legend/caption (a brief paragraph of no more than 85 words describing the cover image and explaining its significance in the context of the accepted manuscript, followed by names to whom the image should be credited)

• A signed copy of nonexclusive cover image license agreement

Cover Image Specifications and Template File

Cover image files should be large enough to fit the journal cover, which prints at 8 1/8 x 10 7/8 inches. In addition, it is helpful to add about 1/4 inch to each edge of the image to allow for cropping and to account for the spine. Digital files, preferably in PSD or TIFF format with layers preserved, should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Image headline should be added to the image as a layer in case the headline needs to be edited...

Authors may wish to download and use our cover image template. This TIFF file shows the exact layout of of a typical cover, including the logo, trim lines, and spine width. Authors may wish to use this file to help with a trial layout and to make sure that an image is sized correctly to fit the cover and spine. When this file is used, layers should not be flattened.

Copyright and License Agreement

Authors must consider copyright issues when submitting cover suggestions. For any work that is protected by copyright, authors must obtain written permission from the rights-holder to use the images. Molecular Plant cannot use images without obtaining proper permissions. If images are purchased from an artist, illustrator, or stock photography agency, authors will have to ask for a copy of the agreement so Molecular Plant can verify the permission to use for such an image.

Molecular Plant does not ask for copyright of the images to be assigned to the journal, but Molecular Plant does ask for a nonexclusive license to use the image. A copy of our license can be found here.

Deadlines for Submitting Images

There is no set deadline for cover image submissions as the scheduling of articles to be printed changes during production. In general, it is best for authors to submit cover suggestions as soon as their submitted paper is accepted for publication. If that is not possible, authors can contact the Editorial Office to learn about submission deadlines and to register their interest of submitting a cover suggestion.
