Student Manager Rules and Guidelines

Student managers must adhere to the following rules and guidelines to remain involved with the IUPUI intercollegiate athletics program. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in removal from the manager position.

  1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities of student managers are established by the coaching staff of each sport. All NCAA rules regarding the functions of a student manager (see below) must be adhered to.

Student managers are not permitted to participate in team drills or practice activities. Only students listed on the team roster can participate in practice activities for the following reasons:

    1. Only students listed on team rosters are covered by the IUPUI athletics insurance. If a student manager gets hurt during practice, the department’s medical insurance will not cover expenses for care of the injury.

    1. Under NCAA rules, any student who is participating in practice activities must meet all NCAA rules regarding eligibility.  The student must have signed all the proper forms and must remain as a fulltime student while they are practicing.  If the student is not on the roster, their eligibility will not be monitored which could result in an NCAA violation.

  1. ACADEMICS: A student manager’s academic performance must never be negatively impacted by his or her duties as a team manager. Student managers are expected to attend class unless they are traveling on the road with their team. Any reports of academic difficulties experienced by a student manager can result in suspension or removal from the position.

  1. ALCOHOL: Student managers under the age of 21 are prohibited from consuming alcohol at any time. Student managers age 21 or over must follow their team’s policies regarding consumption of alcohol both in and out of season.

  1. DRUGS: The use of illegal drugs by student managers is strictly prohibited at all times.

  1. GAMBLING: Student managers must abide by all NCAA rules regarding gambling as outlined in NCAA Bylaw 10.3:

Staff members of a member conference, staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes shall not knowingly:

a. Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition;

b. Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team;

c. Accept a bet on any team representing the institution;

d. Solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate competition for any item (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner) that has tangible value; or

e. Participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling.

  1. ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR: Student managers must keep in mind at all times that they are representing IUPUI and the athletic program. Student managers shall:

    1. Conduct themselves both on and off the field in a way which brings credit to the team, the athletics program, and the University;

    1. Abide by the letter as well as the spirit of University rules and regulations;

    1. At all times respect and be courteous to all members of the University community and to visitors to the campus;

    1. Exhibit dignity in manner and dress when representing the University;

    1. Neither physically abuse or threaten another person nor abuse any University owned or controlled property or property associated with any university sponsored functions;

    1. Not participate in any form of hazing or initiation. Any activity of this nature is strictly prohibited. If it is determined that hazing has occurred, the involved student manager(s) will be suspended or dismissed from the team.

  1. TRAVEL: Student managers who are permitted to travel with their team are required to abide by all team travel rules.

  1. AWARDS: Student managers are not eligible to receive awards that are designated for student-athletes (e.g. senior rings, letters, etc.).

  1. LAUNDRY: Student managers must adhere to the following rules associated with the use of the laundry room in the Natatorium:

    1. Use of the Intramural & Recreational Sports Department laundry room by athletics is restricted to hours outside the recreational sports operational times. The hours when athletics is permitted to utilize the laundry room equipment are Monday-Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and anytime Saturday and Sunday. Student managers are not permitted to use the laundry room during any other times.

    1. All hampers belonging to athletics must be removed from the laundry room during recreational sports operational times. Student managers who use the laundry room are responsible removing their hampers when not using the laundry room equipment.

    1. Do not use the computer located in the laundry room. The computer is the property of the Intramural & Recreational Sports Department and is dedicated to racquetball court reservations only.

    1. Notify the Intramural & Recreational Sports Department if there is a problem with one of the machines or a lack of laundry cleaning supplies.

  1. TICKETS: Student managers may request a maximum of two complimentary admissions to home events in their team’s sport. The names of the two individuals who will receive the complimentary admissions must be submitted to the team’s coach at least two days prior to the event. The names will be placed on the pass list and the individuals must present I.D. to receive admission to the event. Student managers are not eligible for complimentary tickets to athletic events in any other sport.

NCAA Rules Related to Team Managers

  1. A team manager cannot perform any coaching activities (e.g. providing any on-court instruction, analysis of films, etc.). If a team manager performs any activities which can be considered “coaching,” the individual must count against the institution’s coaching limits.

  1. It is not permissible for a student-athlete who is a partial qualifier or nonqualifier to serve as a team manager during their initial year of attendance at the institution.

  1. Although it is permissible for a male student to serve as a team manager for a woman’s team, the individual’s duties should be limited to those traditionally performed as managers. It is not permissible to place a male student in the position of a manager for the purpose of practicing or traveling with the woman’s team.

  1. It is not permissible for a manager to film a pick-up game involving a member institution's student-athletes, provide the film to the institution's coaching staff for review and analysis, and subsequently report an analysis to the student-athletes. Such activity would constitute an impermissible out-of-season practice.
