Tips for making art with young people
The young people who make art at SIGNAL have generously offered their thoughts about what makes a great art session. We hope you find this list useful.
Create a safe space for young people to discuss their opinions and ideas. Listen respectfully and validate their viewpoints.
Allow young people the freedom to create on their own terms, offering advice, tips, and problem solving where needed.
Encourage young people to learn from each other as creative peers, as well as from artists and staff.
Use images and examples from your own practice and other artists’ work to inspire participants.
Give young people time to learn to skills and create new work – don’t rush the creative process.
Be real about the ups and downs of the creative process!
Many thanks to the young people whose feedback at SIGNAL workshops contributed to this list.
