Teacher Guide to Student Worksheet 4- Events and Products

Name: ____________________

Directions: Below are chronologically listed specific historical events which occurred while Pennsylvania was manufacturing iron. These events created an even greater demand for iron. Name as many iron products that you can think of associated with each event.

1839: Dunlap Creek Bridge, the first iron bridge in the United States, is completed.

Iron was used for the construction of bridges and buildings.

1846: Pennsylvania Railroad, “the standard” of railroads, was created.

Iron was used in railroad tracks as well as in the production of trains themselves.

1861-1865: The Civil War: The war fought between northern and southern states.

Iron was used in weaponry for the Civil War. The Griffen gun was a type of cannon produced by the Phoenixville Iron Works. Cannonballs would have also been made of iron.

1862: “Battle of the Ironclads”: Monitor and Merrimack.

Iron was used as armor for ships in this famous battle. Shipbuilding was an industry which used iron.

1862: Homestead Act: This act rewarded settlers with 160 acres of western land if they were willing to move, build a home, and develop the land for five years.

Westward expansion and settlement could have used such iron items as rims of wheels and horseshoes for travel; ironware (kettle, pans) for cooking; and iron nails, door hinges, and gates in constructing the house.

1869: Transcontinental Railroad was completed. The railroad crossed the continental United States.

Iron was used in railroad spikes and the anvils that pounded them. Rails were also made of iron before they switched to steel. The railroad also made possible the transport of iron products to market.
