Upon crossing Middle Settlement Road,
the trail becomes less urban and more rural in character. At this
point, a bike/bench has been placed as an overlook to one of the
many water features adjacent to the trail—providing a rest
area for weary users. Proceeding further to the west, walkers,
cyclists, and fishermen are treated to two fishing/overlook
platforms which provide an excellent opportunity to observe the
wildlife in wetlands that are present on both sides of the trail.

The
NH
&
W Rail Trail
is
a 4 mile asphalt trail connecting the Towns of New Hartford and
Whitestown. It was built as part of the Judd Road (Route 840)
connector, and was completed in the Spring of 2006 It provides a key
transportation and recreational opportunity for the people of the
Mohawk Valley and all who visit it.
The
trail then turns to the northwest and again parallels Route 840,
crossing both Clarks Mills Road and Halsey Road at signalized
intersections. Although adjacent, a grass buffer provides distance
from the highway, and wooded fields and pastures lend to the overall
trail experience.
Access
to the trail at this terminus can be obtained by utilizing the
highway shoulder which connects the NH & W trail to the
Whitestown trail system in this area.
The
trail is marked at each mile in both directions, with the signs
shown below. Tenth of a mile markings are present on the asphalt
trail surface.
Maintenance
and trail security is provided by the Towns of New Hartford and
Whitestown.
